Scores and Highlights from 5/31

Durham Bulls 4, Columbus Clippers 1
A Russ Canzler solo shot and Dan Johnson's tiebreaking 3-run home run was all the offense Durham needed. Brian Baker pitched 7 strong inning, allowing a run on two hits, striking out six and walking one. Rob Delaney and Mike Ekstrom pitched scoreless relief innings. Desmond Jennings went 0-4 and Robinson Chirinos was 1-3 with a double.

Montgomery Biscuits 6, Jackson Generals 5
Matt Moore got the win, allowing a run on five hits and two walks over 6 innings. He struck out six. Stephen Vogt, Daniel Mayora, Henry Wrigley, and Kyeong Kang each had two hits, including Kang's first home run of the year. Kang also hit a triple, as did Mayora. Tim Beckham was 0-5.

Charlotte Stone Crabs 7, Daytona Cubs 0
Alex Colome blanked the Cubs over 7 innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five. Matt Stabelfeld and Michael Jarman each pitched a scoreless inning. No Stone Crab had multiple hits, though Brett Nommensen and Anthony Scelfo each reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Hak-Ju Lee was 1-5 with a triple.

Bowling Green Hot Rods 4, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3 (10 innings)
The Hot Rods won it on Steve Tinoco walk-off single. He finished 2-5, one of four players with two hits (Derek Dietrich, Julio Cedeno, and Hector Guevara). C.J. Riefenhauser started and battled with his control, walking five in 6 innings but minimizing the damage to two runs (one earned). Chris Rearick got the win as he allowed a run on 3 innings of work.

  1. Moore is in a tie for 2nd in minor league strikeouts with 82. Leader is Edwar Cabrera of Rockies org with 85, who's older, 2 levels lower, and has pitched 5.1 more innings.

Thought leading all of the minors in k's twice was impossible, but three years in a row? Could happen.

  2. So any guesses of where guys in EST might end up going for short season ball? I know with the draft it is hard to guess, but I didn't know if maybe yall had some speculations of where guys would go and who might end up going home/get cut at the end of EST.

  3. I think the draft will affect some guys, lots of them are right around 20 yrs old, so if college guys picked at their position could go to Princeton instead of HV. Some are clear, but many are borderline. We'll know for sure in 3 weeks!

Anyone else notice Figueroa hasn't played much 2B lately for Montgomery? Only started 5 of last 10 games (including 6/1), 2 at 2B, 2 at SS, and 1 at DH. O'Malley has started 8 of 10 at 2B.

Not sure who would handle CF for Montgomery if Shelby goes down. Since Matulia has been out, outfield has been Kang in LF, Shelby in CF, and Fronk in RF every day. Vogt and Wrigley can handle LF, and Kang can move to RF, but not sure who can do CF.

Wrigley broke the back and forth between him and Sweeney at 1B today, played back to back games there for first time in last 10 games.

In Charlotte, Jake Jefferies has only played in 3 of the last 9, 2 as DH and the one at 1B. So much for getting him regular ABs. Have to start wondering about his future, 23.6 yrs old, demoted already this year, now not playing much at high-A, hasn't caught, basically a part-time DH.

With Murrill out, Biell and Montero are alternating days in CF with Scelfo mostly in LF and Nommensen every day in RF.

With Thompson back in the rotation tonight, the Leary debacle can end. Rotation now should be Colome - Thompson - Koronis - Kelly - Lobstein, with Niemann making a rehab start Friday.

In BG Kevin Kiermaier has only started 1 of the last 7 games, today in CF. Another guy to watch due to lack of playing time. Glaesmann hasn't started the last 5 games either, no word of an injury so not sure why. Primary LF has been Schwaner, with Tinoco in RF last 5, and mostly Rogers in CF.

3B in BG now is mostly Cedeno, starts 2 games at 3B, one at DH, then off day. Price is splitting time between filling in for Cedeno at 3B and Guevara at 2B and DHing every 3rd or 4th day.

Guevara left today's game in 1st AB, Micheal Compton said his shoulder has been acting up. Have to watch him for possible DL, but BG is covered at 2B with Price and Estrada.

Anyone else notice any playing time trends to keep an eye on?

  4. Maybe Montero could be moved up to CF if Shelby goes down as Ty Morrison already played in XST and could (hopefully) be activated soon for Charlotte.

  5. BurGi,

Montero is hitless. 0-21 to be exact. His last hit was at a family picnic in early April.

Why would you move him to Montgomery?

  6. The middle infield in Montgomery is interesting. O'Malley has played SS until this year, and if I remember correctly, he had all the range for it (don't remember on the arm), so I would have expected him to be there when Beckham gets days off. For some reason, I also vaguely remember something about O'Malley getting some work in CF, although that may have just been a random idea in my head at some point, but perhaps he could play out there if something happens to Shelby.

  7. Montero was on the Biscuits DL all season up until his recent activation and move to Charlotte. So it could be him. He's 26.6 and struggling at A+ (in very limited ABs), so it really doesn't matter where he plays, org filler at this point.

I don't remember O'Malley ever playing in a game in the OF, maybe in spring training one year? Montgomery would find a better option I think. Maybe Scelfo from Charlotte if not Montero.

Doug, Todd Glaesmann tweaked his elbow in practice and as a precaution they are letting it heel before he returns to the lineup.
