Minor Moves: Newmann, Ruiz

According to Stacy Long, the Biscuits have placed LHP David Newmann on the DL. Cuban signee Jorge Julio Ruiz has been added to the roster from the DSL. Ruiz, a first baseman, hit .447 in 13 games for the DSL Rays.

  1. Another 1B??? Why? They already added Anderson and 3 more via the draft this year (Flores, Wunderlich, Tinoco) on top of 2 more via the draft (Weigand, Malm) last year! This was additive to incumbents Richard, Fields, Wrigley, and Sheridan, and now Vogt is playing some 1B at Port Charlotte. What is the plan? Comments from the blogosphere, please!

  2. Do you think there is a high chance we see Leslie in the majors this year?

  3. Wouldn't suprise me, but probably not until after playoff rosters are set. For me, what happens after the year is over (and beyond) is the more interesting question, or set of questions. For instance, will Pena be re-signed? Will Richard be retained? Will Wrigley make a permanent switch to 3B? Will Anderson move permanently to the OF to make room for Ruiz at AAA/ML? What is Fields' future? How do they accommodate all of the new blood with just 6 spots (AA, A+, A, SS A, SS R and GCL) available? Will they draft more 1B's next June? Lot's to chew on that bone - so stay tuned!

  4. A few things to remember on Ruiz: he's 26 years old having defected from Cuba, and when the Rays signed him in early June the contract included a $4mil option for next year that the Rays have to exercise by the end of the season. Given his age and that option, the Rays need to get him up playing against more advanced competition so they can decide if he's worth $4mil. It sure looks to me that the Rays are expecting not to have Pena and replacing him from within the org (Ruiz, Anderson, and if they resign - Dan Johnson, Chris Richard).

  5. Doug - I agree. Ruiz and Anderson were not brought in (at several million $ combined) as insurance policies against Pena not re-signing - they look like pieces of the puzzle to me (or potential trade bait). Anderson has split his time so far roughly 50-50 between OF and 1B, so both could rise together (although that would mean changes to the current OF personnel on the big club).
