Note: $ SLOT is MLB's recommended signing bonuses for players drafted in the first five rounds. After the 5th round MLB recommends a maximum of $125,000, but a team can sign a player for up to $150,000 without consulting the Commishioner's office. Any signing bonuses in excess of MLB's slot recommendations must first go through the Commishioner's office with an explanation justifying the amount of the bonus. Technically, MLB cannot prevent a team and a player from agreeing to any amount they choose, but MLB will exert 'pressure' on teams to stick to the slot recommendations as much as possible.

Over-slot signings, especially large ones for very high picks, will not be approved by MLB until close to the signing deadline, which is midnight on August 16th this year since the 15th is a Sunday. The reason is to prevent a large over-slot signing from inflating the bonuses of other players. For example, if the 20th overall pick gets an over-slot bonus, the 19th pick will demand more the what the 20th signed for, and the 18th will want more than that, and so forth. In addition to pushing up the players drafted ahead, it would also pull up the players behind. In the example, the 21st pick would want something just under what the 20th received, and so forth. The point (not that it's a good one) is to keep large over-slot bonuses secret until the last minute to keep the overall cost of the draft as low as possible across the league.

  6. If anyone spots signing news please post it as a comment in this thread rather than on the players original draft post. It makes it easier for us to keep track of all of them. Also, please post a link to the source if you can. We'll keep bumping this to the top as signings are announced. Thanks for your help again this year.

  7. I sure hope we get Ian Kendall signed. He may very well be the sleeper in this class.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I hope so as well regarding Kendall. I've asked Andy Seiler about him and he thinks that Kendall misses projection. We'll see!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Craige Lyerly (19) and Bryan Fogle (32) signed on 6/10. Adam Liberatore (21) will sign on 6/14.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Broyles is nothing big, was at Ole Miss for a while. Looking forward to seeing him pitch though.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yep, #19 Lyerly on 6/10:

Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) signed with the Tampa Rays on Thursday. It appears Lyerly will start his pro career with the Hudson Valley Renegades (Fishkill, N.Y.) in the New York-Penn League.

Will know more once HV/Princeton/GCL rosters are announced.

  21. Have we signed Thompson yet or not? I heard he was supposed to sign today, but so far nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Its 2 days till the season starts and still no roster for hudson Valley weird.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Any chance Malm, Glaesman, or Bailer start at Hudson Valley?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with the other Anonymous. Hudson Valley is really slow posting its roster. The guys are already in their host homes, and today is media day at the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Updated with Thompson, Hubbard, Winder, Tinoco, Dickmann, and Rearick.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Last year Hudson Valley's roster came out on the 17th and the 1st game was the 19th. This year the 1st game is on the 18th, and we still don't have the roster.

So even though it's aggravating, it's really only a day later than last year (assuming we get the rosters today, of course).

  27. Per an #KG retweet re NDFA Kyle Lusson:
    =======
    Lusson signs with Rays

Undrafted senior Kyle Lusson will get his chance to play professional baseball.

Texas' outfielder got a call Wednesday from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Lusson, who played in 45 games and hit .264 , was the opening-day starter in left field but was used mostly as a substitute for right fielder Kevin Keyes.

  28. Scott Lawson is listed on Princeton's roster, so I added him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Misses projection??? Have you seen Ian Kendall pitch?
At 6'1 he can dunk a basketball and hits 95 regularly after limited high school mound time.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous^

Does he look like he could still grow?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Saw Ian Kendall pitch in May. Stood by a bunch of scouts clocking him at 95 several times. He's the Terminator with a curve that drops off the table.
As a Rays fan, hope he signs soon.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ANy guess where they may send him(Wunderlich)? I'm hoping at least Hudson Valley.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wunderlich is in Hudson Valley.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Updated Jensen, added type of school they were drafted from and which affiliate they were initially assigned to.

And bumped it. Keep the news coming, you guys are a big help.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks Anon, added it to Henderson as "reportedly" just since, well, you're Anon. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. 20th rounder CJ Riefenhauser signed

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jake Thompson is here in Hudson Valley.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jake Thompson has been assigned to Hudson Valley, he is expected to start playing next week (if not, sooner).

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's what I figured, updated now since it's official.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bumped and updated with #20 C.J. Riefenhauser and #46 George Jensen being assigned to Princeton.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Merrill Kelly is supposed to have signed and is expected to arrive in Hudson Valley within the next day or two.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Also, Jake Thompson pitched tonight, easily and consistantly hitting the mid-90s.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So he looked good? I hope they have him go as a starter! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Updated with Jimmy Patterson signing

    ReplyDelete
  50. I know this is not a MLB player draft signing but Ben Badler of Baseball America is reporting that the Rays have signed Dominican center fielder Yoel Araujo for $800,000.

    ReplyDelete
  51. diamondtom, it looks like he is a pickup. Like top 10.

    ReplyDelete
  52. According to BA, Merrill Kelly has signed for 125K

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks Jordan. Updated Kelly per the BA $ and Sean McMann's article: http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20100704/SPORTS03/7040373/Renegades-Price-played-for-former-Marist-coach

    And bumped.

    ReplyDelete
  54. According to St. Pete Times, IF Ryan Brett (3rd Round) signed and will play at GCL Port Charlotte.

    ReplyDelete
  55. According to St. Pete Times, Brett also said now that he has signed, he will try hard to get Sale signed soon, they are very good friends.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks for the tips on Brett, updated and bumped.

    ReplyDelete
  57. One note, 8th round pick Merrill Kelly is now going by Kenneth Kelly with the Rays. His full names is Kenneth Merrill Kelly. He's been assigned to the Hudson Valley Renegades. Hope that clears up any confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  58. 10th rounder Dixon has signed, a bit of a suprise.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Doug, how is that much of a surpise? I actually expected him to sign...BTW Doug, where do you think he might be headed...maybe GCL Rays? I wonder where he'll end up with the Rays in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Surprise, sorry, have trouble with that one. Because he's a HS kid who waited over a month to sign. If he wanted to up his bonus he'd have played all summer, if he wanted to get started professionally he's have signed quicker. The surprise isn't that he signed, but the timing.

Must be at slot or they wouldn't have been able to announce it yet. I'd say he's definitely headed to GCL. Sounds like he has a lot to like too, toolsy type the Rays like.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Patterson is supposed to arrive in Hudson Valley soon.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Added bonuses for Brett and Dixon.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Doug, I like the latest news segment on unsigned players. Nice work.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thanks Tom, sorry there isn't more. I read it, so I thought I'd share. I didn't include things like being named to All-Star teams or playing in the Cape Cod league, just info on possibly signing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. There was also this on #47 Montes from the San Diego High School Baseball Showcase on July 12th:

"Hector Montes, an infielder from Bonita Vista, put on a very impressive power display during batting practice, belting numerous homers to left and center field. At 235 lbs, he was surprisingly fast, running his 60 in 7.47 seconds. Montes was dominant during his high school season batting .429 and hitting 7 home runs."

  67. One more note on 6th rounder Jesse Hahn from the BA chat today:

JAYPERS (IL): At this point, who are the more prominent names in this year's draft who you're at least 75% certain will NOT sign?

Jim Callis: Looking at guys who ranked in the Top 50 on our predraft prospect rankings, I'll say Austin Wilson jumps out. Barret Loux and Jesse Hahn may not sign because of injury questions, and I would be surprised if the Dodgers signed both Zach Lee and Kevin Gausman.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anybody know if we have a shot at signing Jessie Hahn?

    ReplyDelete
  69. See #4 Wood news update, not sure if this means anything or not, but USC coach sounds like it does.

    ReplyDelete
  70. What are the chances Jake DePew will sign

    ReplyDelete
  71. Updated some bonus and assignment info, so bumped it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. JAYPERS (IL): What's the status of negotiations with TB draftees Josh Sale, Drew Vettleson, Jesse Hahn, Austin Wood and Michael Lorenzen? Do you see any of them not signing?

Jim Callis: All potential over-slot deals, which is why they haven't gotten done yet. I think Sale, Vettleson and Hahn are good bets to sign. Wood might be, though he boosted his stock with a good summer in the Cape League. Lorenzen might be the toughest sign of that group.

  74. Sorry, didn't see Doug's post.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Per BA 11th rounder Travis Flores has signed.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I added $ SLOT, with explanation, and updated Flores being assigned to GCL.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm glad Flores has eventually signed. He is straight on my list of top prospects. His power should really be something.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Could someone get rid of this spam. It keeps on coming.

    ReplyDelete
  79. 6th rounder Jesse Hahn:

Hahn said “it’s looking good” as far as a deal with the Rays is concerned.

    But:

The recent surgery also means Hahn won’t be throwing any time soon. He has the brace off and is now moving his arm freely. Hahn says he “couldn’t feel any better with no pain,” but he won’t attempt to throw for another four months. He said it will likely be a year before he can expect to get back on the mound.

Link. (scroll down to 2nd part of article)

    ReplyDelete
  80. I heard Wood originally was holding out for 2nd round money. This summer may have upped his sights though.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Nice video of Travis Flores dropping bombs at the Trop and winning the Power Showcase. If this guys is so good how the heck did he drop to that far in the draft. Can you imagine this kid and Sale coming up through the system together.

    ReplyDelete
  82. 9th rounder Jake DePew has signed for $640,000 according to a tweet from BaseballAmerica's Jim Callis. No idea how they're going to find ABs for him, Justin O'Conner, and Luke Bailey in the low levels.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Move O'Connor to Princeton (he seems to have adjusted the fastest) and play Bailey/De Pew in Charlotte. Or ... just play 2 of the 3 at DH/C and make them work a lot at catching till next year. It's more about adjusting to the wooden bats and hitting in pro ball than learning catching in the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  84. DePew makes 31 out of 53 signed. I assume Sale and Vettleson will sign, we lose Vettleson's pick for good if he doesn't. I don't think Wood or Lorenzen will. Hahn seems to think he will sign, but even if he does he probably won't pitch again until 2012, with no guarantee he'll ever be healthy, so that's going to affect his bonus quite a bit. Below that probably very few more will sign, or they would have already.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Supplemental round picks aren't protected? Are either of the Dominicans catching in Princeton real prospects? No Justin Woodall?

    ReplyDelete
  86. My mistake, Vettleson would give us another pick next year if he doesn't sign. O'Conner was the comp pick for LeVon Washington and Dietrich was the comp for not signing Kenny Diekroeger.

Don't know why I was thinking Vettleson wasn't protected (we got the pick for Gregg Zaun signing with the Brewers). Sorry about that, and thanks for catching it Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Signing bonus wise, how much do you think it take to sign Overbey and Holiman? And a second question, do you think either of those guys sign?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'd be shocked if either of those guys signed.

    ReplyDelete
  89. When will Hahn be able to pitch again?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Probably late next summer, he had Tommy John surgery last month.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Any chance whatsoever on Lorenzen?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Everything I've heard on Lorenzen sounds doubtful. We'll know for sure in 15 hours.

Sale and Vettleson sound promising, they both posted online that they were traveling to FL on Sunday for negotiations.

Wood's Cape Cod League performance may have increased his demands, who knows how much, maybe too much. And as Kevin has pointed out his performance was that great when you look beyond the ERA.

Other than that I don't think anyone else will sign. Maybe someone in the 20's like Woodall to an overslot deal, but doubt more than one of the later picks.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Well, hasn't this been an exciting day. After over 12 hours I'm heading home, without one doggone signing to report. Hopefully Kevin will be around this evening to update if anything finally comes out. If not, I'll update in the a.m.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm here but unfortunately still nothing to report.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Michael Lorenzen going to college

    ReplyDelete
  96. conorglassey

#Rays sign first-rounder Josh Sale for around $1.62 million and supplemental first-rounder Drew Vettleson for around $845,000

    ReplyDelete
  97. I found this on a USC blog.

Wood, a hard-throwing 6-foot-4, 220-pounder, was the the surprise of the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer, posting a 0.74 ERA in 36 1/3 innings. Late Monday, the Rays offered him a contract at well-above the major-league recommended level for his selection, only to have the pitcher counter-offer for a significantly higher figure, according to Cruz. ( Cruz is a volunteer assitant with USC)

  98. That is very interesting. Thanks for that. My guess is they gave him a little below a million, and he anted something like 1.5 million.

  99. Pretty surpised and excited they managed to get Jake Depew under contract. I thought that was a sure no sign. Granted they gave him a crazy bonus, but i think he could be very impressive.

  100. Updated with #26 Woodall signing per the BA board. The August 16th deadline did not apply to him since he used up his college eligibility playing football, he could have signed up until 7 days before the 2011 draft. Still, no idea why he waited so long, unless he was hoping for an NFL offer.

  101. I have a question. A player that was drafted in the lower rounds, 25th and on. What is the chance of them recieving an offer? Is it still good that, a team who has not offera player yet, but is still in contact with the draftee, have a chance of recieving an offer by the deadline?
