Stone Crabs Second Half Troubles Continue with Loss to Palm Beach

The Charlotte Stone Crabs struck first but ended up losing 2-1 in extra innings against the Palm Beach Cardinals on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Stone Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Hall singled to right to get things going. Hall stole second then scored on an RBI by Isaias Velasquez to take a 1-0 lead.

Palm Beach fought back to tie the game in the seventh inning. Tommy Pham doubled to center lead off the inning. Chris Swauger laid down a bunt that combined with a throwing error by Jake Jefferies, allowed Pham to score.

The game would remain tied 1-1 at the end of the ninth frame, forcing extra inning. The winner was determined in the bottom of the eleventh inning when Palm Beach pushed across a run. D'Marcus Ingram doubled to center to put a runner in scoring position. Xavier Scruggs drove him home with an RBI single to left, giving the Cardinals the 2-1 walk-off victory.

Frank De Los Santos pitched a great game, pitching 7 2/3 innings and allowing just 1 runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Neil Schenk provided 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out 1 and walking 1. Rayner Oliveros suffered the loss, giving up the winning run on 2 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1 in 1 2/3 innings on the mound.

The Stone Crabs return home to Charlotte Sports Park to kick off a three game series against the Bradenton Marauders. Shane Dyer will make the start for Charlotte against Brian Leach of Bradenton.
