Matt Fields goes deep as Stone Crabs fall to Fort Myers

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs lost to the Fort Myers Miracle 6-4 at Charlotte Sports Park and moved into a tie for first with the Miracle. Fort Myers jumped out to an early lead by scoring five runs in the first three innings.

The Miracle offense started in the first as Steve Singleton and Ben Revere both singled and then Chris Parmelee hit a 2-RBI single to right to drive them home. Fort Myers added to their lead in the second when Mark Dolenc tripled to left and Steve Singleton followed with an RBI double and then Ben Revere with an RBI single to center. The Miracle got their fifth run in the third inning off a solo home run by Chris Parmelee. Fort Myers now had 5-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Fields led off the inning with single to center. Reid Fronk and Shawn Williams both drew walks to load the bases for Nevin Ashley. Ashley grounded into a double play, but Fields managed to score. Ryan Royster singled to right to score Fronk and pull within 3 runs of Fort Myers.

The Stone Crabs added two more runs in the sixth inning as Matt Fields hit a solo home run to center, his fourth of the season. Nevin Ashley also contributed to the inning by hitting a sac fly to score Reid Fronk and put the Stone Crabs down by 1. Fort Myers picked up an insurance run in the top of the eight on an RBI single by Danny Lehmann and Fort Myers held onto the lead to win 6-4.

Jesse Darcy struggled with the start giving up 5 runs on 10 hits in 6 innings of work and collecting 2 strikeouts in the losing effort. Kevin Boggan gave up 1 unearned run and 3 hits while striking out 2 in 2 innings. Paul Phillips pitched 1 inning of no hit relief. David Bromberg was the winning pitcher for Fort Myers.

What Went Right: Matt Fields; 2-4 with a HR, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

What Went Wrong: Jesse Darcy; 5 runs given up.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs finish the series against the Miracle by traveling to Fort Myers. David Newmann (1-1) will face Tyler Robertson (1-0)
