Charlotte Stone Crabs fall to Clearwater

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs were unable to contain Clearwater’s offense as they lose to the Threshers 10-1 at Brighthouse Networks Field on Thursday. The Stone Crabs scored first on a solo home run by Greg Sexton in the second inning to give the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead.

But it was Clearwater in command the rest of the game long, taking the lead in the bottom of the second on a two run homer by Joel Naughton and never looking back. The Threshers picked up five more runs in the sixth when Matt Rizzotti delivered a grand slam off Jesse Darcy and Cody Overbeck provided an RBI single to score Joe Naughton and give the Threshers a 7-1 lead.

The Threshers added two more runs in the seventh off a double by Tim Kennelly that scored Javis Diaz and Dominic Brown. Then Cody Overbeck hit a solo home run in the eighth to give the Clearwater the 10-1 margin of victory.

Jesse Darcy collected the loss by surrendering 6 runs off 6 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work, he struck out 1 and walked 2 on the night. Kevin Boggan pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts. Brian Flores finished out the night for Charlotte going 1 inning and allowing 1 run on 2 hits with a walk. Michael Cisco was the winning pitcher for Clearwater.

What Went Right: John Matulia; made his Stone Crab debut by going 2-3 with a triple.

What Went Wrong: Jesse Darcy; allowed 6 runs, 6 hits, 2 homer including a grand slam in 5 1/3 innings falling to 0-5 on the season with a 6.65 ERA.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs finish out the series against Clearwater on Friday night at Brighthouse Networks Field. David Newmann will be on the mound for Charlotte.
