Charlotte Stone Crabs lose to Palm Beach in extra frames

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: It took 14 innings to determine a winner as the Charlotte Stone Crabs lost to the Palm Beach Cardinals 2-1 at Roger Dean Stadium. It was definitely a night for pitchers as both teams combined for 29 strikeouts in the game.

Palm Beach got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning as Jermaine Curtis drove home Jose Garcia. The Stone Crabs evened the score in seventh when Reid Fronk hit an RBI double to left that scored Emeel Salem and tied the score at 1-1.

The tie held into the bottom of the fourteenth inning. Thomas Pham singled to right to get things started for the Cardinals. Francisco Rivera followed with a single to Emeel Salem that was misplayed, allowing Pham to advance to third. Pham scored on a wild pitch by Kevin Boggan to give the Cardinals the win 2-1.

The Stone Crabs used 4 pitchers on the night that combined to strike out 14 and give up 11 hits. David Newmann pitched 6 innings with the start giving up 1 run on 3 hits striking out 6 and walking 2. Austin Hinkle was next out of the bullpen throwing 3 innings giving up 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. Rayner Oliveros went 4 shutout innings allowing 3 hits with 6 strikeouts and a walk. Kevin Boggan was charged with the loss giving up 1 run on 2 hits in 1/3 inning of work. Chuckie Fick picked up the win for Palm Beach.

What Went Right: Pitching; combined for 14 strikeouts, only allowed 1 earned run off 11 hits.

What Went Wrong: The Offense; only managed 4 hits in 14 innings of play, 6 of the 10 hitters were hitless on the night, 0-7 with runners in scoring position.

A Look Ahead: The Charlotte Stone Crabs try to avoid being swept by the Palm Beach Cardinals Saturday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Righty Jeremy Hall (3-2) is scheduled to pitch against righty Richard Castillo (0-4).
