Charlotte Stone Crabs avoid the sweep by beating Palm Beach

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs avoided the sweep by defeating the Palm Beach Cardinals 2-1 at Roger Dean Stadium. Palm Beach jumped out to an early lead as Paul Vazquez double to left field to score Chris Swauger, putting the Cardinals ahead 1-0.

The Stone Crabs answered back in the third. Matthew Hall got things going with a single to left. Reid Fronk drew a walk putting runners at first and second. Matt Fields drove them home with a two run double to put the Stone Crabs out in front 2-1.

The Stone Crabs defense kept the Cardinals off the board for the remainder of the game. Reid Fronk gunned down Shane Peterson at home in the fourth to keep the run from scoring. In the fifth it was Christian Lopez who threw out Colt Sedbrook at second to keep the runner from getting into scoring position.

Jim Morrison and Cody Cipriano were both ejected from tonight’s game by home plate umpire Jordan Ferrell. Cody Cipriano hit a long fly ball that cleared the fence but was ruled a foul ball rather than a homerun. Morrison argued his case and was tossed by the umpire. Cipriano followed being ejected after striking out.

Jeremy Hall was the winning pitcher going 5 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 4 batters. The bullpen pitched 4 innings of no hit baseball. Brian Flores collected 2 strike outs in 2 innings. Matt Gorgen earned the save by pitching 2 innings and striking out 1. Richard Castillo was the losing pitcher for Palm Beach.

What Went Right: Matt Fields; 3-4 with 2 doubles and both RBI’s. The bullpen; 4 innings of no hit relief.

What Went Wrong: Runners in scoring position; 2-11 with RISP. Omar Luna; continues to struggle at the plate 0-4 today and no hits in his last 12 plate appearances dropping his average to .159.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs head back to Charlotte Sports Park to kick off a six game homestand. They begin with a three game series against the St. Lucie Mets (18-17). Darin Downs (5-1) will get the start for the Stone Crabs.
