The Candidates: Jeremy Hellickson, Heath Rollins, Eduardo Morlan, Calvin Medlock. Hellickson had a 1.93 ERA over 28.0 innings with 33 strikeouts and 8 walks and only one home run allowed. In his 5 starts he never went less than 5 innings and never allowed more than 2 earned runs. Rollins had a 2.91 ERA in 21.2 innings with 13 strikeouts and 5 walks. He didn't allow a home run all month. Morlan appeared in 8 games and put up a 2.03 ERA over 13.1 innings with 9 strikeouts and 6 walks. Medlock appeared in 9 games and had a 2.13 ERA over 12.2 innings with 19 strikeouts and only one walk.
The Winner: Jeremy Hellickson. The 22 year-old is dominating the Southern League the way he did the Florida State League last year (7-1, 2.00 ERA over 76.2 IP, 83/5 K/BB, 7 HR's). This should quiet the critics of his performance after his promotion to Montgomery last year (3.94 ERA in 75.1 IP, 79/15 K/BB, 15 HR's). He was drafted by the Rays in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of Hoover High School in Iowa.
