Charlotte Stone Crabs fall to Jupiter Hammerheads

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs suffer their third loss in a row as they fall to the Jupiter Hammerheads 7-4 at Charlotte Sports Park. The Hammerheads came out swinging with the first three batters collecting hits. Gregory Burns and Matt Dominguez led off the game with back to back singles to center field. Mike Stanton followed by delivering a three run homer to put the Hammerheads ahead 3-0.

The Jupiter hit parade continued in the top of the second inning as the Hammerheads collected six hits in the inning, including two doubles. Gregory Burns, Matt Dominguez and Geraldo Valentin all picked up RBI’s in the inning and Jupiter took a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs began some offense of their own in the bottom of the second. Reid Fronk picked up a walk to start the inning and advanced to second off a ground out by Greg Sexton. Nevin Ashley drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Ryan Royster. With Royster at the plate, Reid Fronk steals third and later scores on the play thanks to a throwing error by Jupiter catcher Miguel Fermin. Royster than delivered an RBI single to score Ashley. The Stone Crabs added two more in the third as Pedro Powell led of the inning with a single to left and then was brought home by a two run homer by Cody Cipriano, his fourth of the season. The Stone Crabs closed the gap, but the Hammerheads held on for the win 7-4.

Darin Downs suffered his first loss of the season giving up 7 runs on 9 hits in 3 1/3 innings. The bullpen provided 5 2/13 innings of shut-out relief as Rayner Oliveros and Austin Hinkle combined to strike out 5 batters. Derell McCall was the winning pitcher for Jupiter.

What Went Right: Ryan Royster; 2-4 with an RBI.

What Went Wrong: Matt Fields; 0-4 with K’s. Darin Downs; 7 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.

A Look Ahead: The Charlotte Stone Crabs and Jupiter Hammerheads face off for game two of the series at Charlotte Sports Park. Alex Cobb (1-2) will face Jose Rosario (0-1).
