Darin Downs remains undefeated as Stone Crabs shut out the Hammerheads

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: Darin Downs was on the top of his game again throwing an eight inning shut out helping the Charlotte Stone Crabs beat the Jupiter Hammerheads 6-0. The Stone Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Pedro Powell and Emeel Salem singled and then were drove home by a three run homer by Matt Hall to put the Stone Crabs up 3-0.

The Stone Crabs added three more runs in the sixth inning. Nevin Ashley hit an RBI single to score Shawn Williams. Omar Luna followed with an RBI triple to right field scoring Ashley. Pedro Powel drove home the third run of the inning off a single to right that scored Luna. The Stone Crabs now led by the score of 6-0.

Jupiter collected four hits in the game, two of them doubles, but were unable to push across a run as Darin Downs shut them out every opportunity. Matt Dominguez and Thomas Hickman doubled for the Hammerheads.

Darin Downs recorded his fifth win of the season with his eight inning shut-out performance. Downs gave up four hits while striking out six batters. Justin Garcia pitched the ninth inning striking out two of the three batters he faced. Derell McCall was the losing pitcher for the Hammerheads.

What Went Right: Darin Downs; shut-out performance improving to 5-0. Pedro Powell 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Matt Fields; 2-3 with a double.

What Went Wrong: Reid Fronk; 0-4 with 2 K’s

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs look for the sweep as they finish the series against the Hammerheads. Alex Cobb (0-2) will pitch against Elih Villanueva (2-2).
