Mongtgomery Biscuits defeat West Tennessee 10-4

The Game: The Montgomery Biscuits defeated the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx 10-4 on Friday night at Pringles Park, securing the only Rays affiliate win on the evening.

The Biscuits jumped out to an early lead in the fist inning. Chris De La Cruz doubled to right to get things going. Chris Nowak followed with a walk. Nevin Ashley then reached on an error to load the bases. Cody Cipriano drove home the first run with a sac fly to center that scored De La Cruz. Then Matt Fields struck a two run double to five the Biscuits a 3-0 lead.

West Tennessee wasted no time scoring as Alex Liddi homered in the bottom of the first inning for their first run of the game.

The Biscuits matched the run with a home run of their own in the second. This one came off the bat of John Matulia to give the Biscuits a 4-1 lead.

Montgomery struck again in the third inning. Chris Nowak singled to second and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cody Cipriano then reached base after being hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced into scoring position after an error on the pick-off throw. Greg Sexton plated two runs with a single to center to increase the lead to 6-1.

The Diamond Jaxx cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. Kuo Hui Lo hit a two run home run to left field to bring the score to 6-3.

The Biscuits pushed across a few more runs in the seventh. Nevin Ashley double to lead off the inning. Cody Cipriano drew a walk and Matt Fields singled to load the bases. Cody Strait was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to collect an RBI the painful way. John Matulia then drove home a run with a sac fly. Emeel Salem followed with two RBI’s on a double to center, increasing the lead to 10-4.

West Tennessee added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Alex Liddi, but the Biscuits held on for a 10-5 win.

Alex Torres earned the win, pitching 7 innings and allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts and a walk. Dane De La Rosa pitched an inning and gave up 1 run on 3 hits with a strikeouts. Matt Gorgen pitched a no-hit ninth with a strikeout.

Biscuits Player of the Game: Matt Fields; 3 for 5 with a double, 2 RBI’s and a run scored.

A Look Ahead: The Biscuits (12-10) will play the Diamond Jaxx (11-11) again on Saturday night at Pringles Park. Darin Downs will start for Montgomery (2-0, 1.59) against Maurico Robles (2-1, 2.84) for West Tennessee.
