Minor Moves: Williams

Per the Charlotte Stone Crabs, infielder Shawn Williams asked to be released on Sunday, and the Tampa Bay Rays granted his request.

The 26 year-old infielder/designated hitter played in 96 for Charlotte last season and filled the third base hole when Greg Sexton got injured mid-season. He had gone 5-for-17 (.294) with two RBIs in six games for the Crabs this season.

  1. Maybe he should try to catch on somewhere as a pitcher.

  2. I thought about posting those too, but didn't want to look like I was making fun of him. Over 3 seasons he pitched in 5 games, going 4.1 innings and allowing 8 hits and 3 ER. He did strike out 5 and only allow one walk. ERA 6.23. No decisions or saves. He's no Anthony Scelfo.

  3. I believe he is the younger brother of Hot Rods manager Brady Williams.

  4. I'm not sure about that DiamondTom, nothing in the media guide and I haven't ever heard it. I do know that Brady is the son of former MLB manager and Rays Special Instructor Jimy Williams. Brady is only 30, so a 26 year-old brother is a strong possibility. Best of luck in the future to Shawn too.

  5. Tom and Doug- Brady and Shawn are indeed brothers.

Surprised to see this, my friend and I were just speculating how long Shawn would stay around. I think he could definitely try to give pitching a shot, if not I think he will make a very good coach like his brother and dad. Class act guy who represented the Rays organization well.
