5/19: The Rundown

Toledo Mud Hens 5, Durham Bulls 3
Box | Recap
Notes: Durham fell to 23-17... The Bulls have lost their last 3 games by scores of 5-0, 5-1, and 5-3... All 3 of Durham's runs came in the 9th, including a 2-run double by Alvin Colina... Carlos Hernandez got the loss, allowing 2 runs in an inefficient 4.2 innings (he threw 97 pitches)... Mike Ekstrom, Winston Abreu, and Heath Rollins each allowed a run in relief, though Ekstrom's and Rollins' were unearned... Desmond Jennings went 0-4 with a strikeout, his second straight hitless game... Joe Dillon was the only Bull with 2 hits...
The Leftovers: A lull for the Durham offense, with only 4 runs in their previous three games.... Carlos Hernandez has 36 strikeouts to 18 walks in 44.2 innings...

Montgomery Biscuits 3, Birmingham Barons 2
Box | Recap
Notes: Montgomery improved to 20-18... Alex Torres allowed 2 runs in the 1st inning, but settled in to strike out 8 and walk 3 over 5 innings... Dane De La Rosa got the win in relief with 2 scoreless innings... Matt Sweeney went 1-4 with an RBI double in his Biscuits debut. He also committed an error at 3B... Cody Strait and Drew Anderson also drove runs in...
The Leftovers: Dane De La Rosa is 4-0 on the season with a 2.76 ERA and only 2 walks in 16.1 innings... The 1st inning damage for Torres may have been worse, but he picked off a runner, his 3rd of the season. His K-BB rate is 46-18 in 41 innings...

Charlotte Stone Crabs 5, Tampa Yankees 3
Box | Recap
Notes: Charlotte improved to 19-19... Nick Barnese struggled with his control for the first time this season, walking 4 in 3.2 innings. For whatever it's worth, Tampa starter Graham Stoneburner walked 5 in 4 innings, so perhaps there was a tight strike zone... Marquis Fleming got the win, striking out 6 in 2.1 innings... Zach Quate notched the 2-inning save, striking out 3... Matt Joyce went 1-2 with 2 walks and an RBI double on a rehab assignment... Reid Fronk drove in 2...
The Leftovers: Zach Quate has a 0.46 ERA in 19.2 innings. His K-BB ratio is an outstanding 30-3. Definite shades of Ryan Reid and Matt Gorgen (Reid had a 45-3 ratio in 31 innings at Vero Beach, Gorgen's walk totals weren't as low)...

Bowling Green Hot Rods 4, Great Lakes Loons 1
Box | Recap
Notes: Bowling Green improved to 12-25... Alexander Colome allowed just an unearned run on 3 hits and a walk in 6 innings of work. He struck out 6... Kirby Yates pitched the final 3 innings, striking out 5... Dustin Biell was 2-4 with a walk and an RBI... Ty Morrison stole his 14th base. He hasn't been caught...
The Leftovers: Colome lowered his ERA to 1.97 to go along with a 47-13 K-BB rate in 45.2 innings. Discouting his first start of the season, he's allowed 4 earned runs in 42.2 innings (ERA of 0.84)... Yates has 31 strikeouts in 19 innings...

  1. Great to see the Rods win this won. Finally didn't waste a solid pitching effort.

Morrison K'd 3 times. Some of the pitches he is swinging at you couldn't reach with a broom stick. 37 K's 4 BB. Terrible. Time to give Glaesmann a shot. He has a much better command of the strike zone.

Two HR from the entire OF. A three run HR isn't going to happen too often with this group.
