Rays Picks: Rounds 21-25

Rays 21st Round Pick - 649th Overall: RHP Matthew Swilley
Looking for info. California HS kid. BaseballAmerica has a bit on him from their Urban Youth Academy review:
Also slightly undersized, Swilley delivered the sharpest curveball of the evening, a sweeping two-plane sideways knee-buckler at 76. Swilley complements his deuce with an 88-90 mph heater which peaks at 91.
Rays 22nd Round Pick - 679th Overall: LHP Jake Sullivan
He's from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. He's 6'5" and a 4th-year junior. Posted a 5.82 ERA in 2009.

Rays 23rd Round Pick - 709th Overall: RHP Trevor Peterson
He's a Texas high schooler. Rated #54 in the state of Texas by BaseballAmerica:
Righthander Trevor Petersen has size (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and arm strength (his fastball sits at 88-90 mph and touches 94) on his side. He slings the ball from a low arm angle that makes it difficult to stay on top of his slurvy slider and will need a lot of work, but the raw material is there. He's considered signable despite a commitment to Louisiana Tech.
Rays 24th Round Pick - 739th Overall: LHP Andrew Heaney
He's an Oklahoma high schoolers, rated #15 in the state by BaseballAmerica. Looking for some scouting. Oklahoma State commit. Can't find anything in the way of what he throws.

Ryan WiegandRays 25th Round Pick - 769th Overall: 1B Ryan Wiegand
He's at Gonzaga University. Hit .318/.395/.507 as a senior in 2009. BaseballAmerica:
Ryan Wiegand is Gonzaga's all-time leader in hits, doubles and RBIs. He carried the team in the West Coast Conference title-clinching game that earned the school its first regional trip since 1981, hitting three home runs and driving in eight. After hitting 11 homers last year, he had just six this year but a nice overall line of .330/.407/.517 thanks to 21 doubles. He's limited to first base and doesn't show much loft for a guy who is 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds.

  1. Matt Swilley, the 21st round pick, comes out of El Camino High School, in Oceanside, CA. He had injury problems (back) his senior year, allowing him to only throw 15 innings, causing him to be complately under the radar. He can hit 94-95 and his slider is nasty, although he does have a hard time controlling both pitches.
