Andy Sonnanstine To Pitch For Durham Bulls Thursday

The Durham Bulls today announced RHP Andy Sonnanstine, a key member of the 2008 American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays, will pitch for the Bulls on Thursday, July 2nd when Durham takes on their cross-state rivals, the Charlotte Knights.

Sonnanstine was optioned to Durham on Friday when the Rays activated Scott Kazmir from the disabled list. He made 15 starts for the Rays this season, posting a 6-7 record with a 6.61 ERA.

Last season, Sonnanstine was 13-9 with a 4.38 ERA while making 32 starts for Tampa Bay. Known for his control, he struck out 124 hitters against only 37 walks. He made three starts for the Rays in the post-season, going 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA.

Sonnanstine was 6-4 with a 2.66 ERA when he made 11 starts for the Bulls in 2007, his only time spent in Durham. He was recalled on June 2nd and went on to sport a 6-10 record with a 5.85 ERA with the Rays.

In his first three full minor league seasons, Sonnanstine won the Pitcher of the Year at his respective level each season (2004: Hudson Valley, 2005: Visalia, 2006: Montgomery). In 2006, he set the Rays minor league record for wins with 15.
