Charlotte Stone Crabs fall to Daytona Cubs 6-3

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs lost to the Daytona Cubs 6-3 on Thursday night at Charlotte Sports Park, ending the winning streak at three games. Daytona got on the board first in the third inning as Tony Campana drove home Dylan Johnson to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Stone Crabs tied the game in the bottom of the inning off a single by John Matulia that allowed Shawn O’Malley to score.

The Cubs broke the tie in the top of the fourth on a two run homer by Robinson Chirinos and added another in the fifth on a solo homer by Dylan Johnson to take a 4-1 lead. The Cubs added to their lead in the seventh as Jonathan Wyatt scored on an sac fly by Starlin Castro. Daytona put up another run in the eight on an RBI single by Jonathan Wyatt to score Jake Opitz, giving the Cubs a 6-1 lead.

The Stone Crabs rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Cody Cipriano led off the inning with a single to right followed by a walk issued to Reid Fronk. Christian Lopez reached first on an error to load the bases. Omar Luna singled to second to score Cipriano and keep the bases loaded. Shawn O’Malley drove in Fronk for the second run of the inning. But the Stone Crabs were unable to push across any more runs and took the loss 6-3.

Jeremy Hall took the loss by giving up 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 2 in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Brian Flores pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with a walk issued. Kevin Boggan completed the game allowing 1 hit in 2 innings with 2 strikeouts. Craig Muschko was the winning pitcher for Daytona.

What Went Right: Shawn O’Malley; 1 for 4 with an RBI, run scored, stolen base and drew a walk.

What Went Wrong: The offense; only produced 5 hits while striking out 8times and going 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Cubs play game three of the series on Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park. Lefty Darin Downs (5-2) will take the mound for the Stone Crabs facing Daytona’s Andrew Cashner (0-0).
