Bowling Green Hot Rods drop close game to Fort Wayne 5-4

Bowling Green Hot RodsThe Game: The Bowling Green Hot Rods fell to 0-2 on the season by losing to the Fort Wayne Tin Caps 5-4 in a close game Friday night at Park View Field.

Fort Wayne took the lead in the first inning. Edinson Rincon singled to left then later scored on an RBI double by Nathan Freiman to give the Tin Caps a 1-0 lead.

The Tin Caps increased their lead in the second inning. Jonathan Alia drew a walk to lead off the inning. Then Wande Olabisi tripled to center to score Alia and give Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead.

The Hot Rods cut the lead in half in the third inning. Dustin Biell led off the inning with a walk then advanced into scoring position with a stolen base. Chris Murrill plated the run with an RBI double to left, scoring Biell and pulling the Hot Rods to within a run of the lead 2-1.

Fort Wayne fought added some separation in the bottom of the fifth inning. Griffin Bendedict singled to left to lead off the inning then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jeudy Valdez drove home a run with a double to score Benedict and increase the lead to 3-1.

The Tin Caps added two more runs an inning later. Nathan Freiman got things going with a double to left. Jonathan Alia then singled followed by a walk to Wande Olabisi to load the bases. Freiman scored on a balk and all runners advanced. Jonathan Galvis then singled to right, Alia scored on the play but Olabisi was out at the plate to end the inning and limit the damage.

The Hot Rods posted another run in the seventh inning. Brett Nommensen double to right to lead off. Nommensen then stole third. Dustin Biell plated the run with a ground out to short to pull Bowling Green to within three runs of the lead.

Bowling Green rallied in the top of the ninth inning. Eli Sonoqui drew a walk then advanced to second on a walk. Julio Cedeno then drove him home with a triple to right. Cedeno would then score on a ground ball by Brett Nommensen. But the Hot Rods could not rally another run and fell one run short, 5-4.

Jason McEachern suffered the loss, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in 4 2/3 innings. Jairo De La Rosa followed with 1 1/3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with a strikeout and a walk. Alex Koronis pitched 2 no-hit innings, recording 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Hot Rods Player of the Game: Alex Koronis: 2 no-hit innings with 4 strikeouts kept Fort Wayne off the scoreboard while the Hot Rods tried to rally.

A Look Ahead: The Hot Rods (0-2) look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Fort Wayne Tin Caps (2-0) on Saturday at Park View Field. Shane Dyer will start for Bowling Green against Mike Watts of Fort Wayne.
