4/11: The Rundown

Norfolk Tides 12, Durham Bulls 3
Box | Recap
Notes: Durham fell to 1-2... Starter Jeff Bennett and reliever Richard De Los Santos each allowed 6 runs... Fernando Perez, Chris Richard, and John Jaso picked up two hits apiece. Richard hit a solo homerun, Perez tripled, and Jaso had a double... Matt Joyce was hit by a pitch and was taken out of the game...
The Leftovers: No updates on Matt Joyce yet(keep an eye out for Chris over at Watching Durham Bulls Baseball, he may have an update), but he's really run into some bad luck early this year. Let's hope it's nothing serious... The Durham rotation has been suspect behind Jeremy Hellickson so far, while the offense hasn't quite broken out yet...

Montgomery Biscuits 1, Mobile BayBears 0
Box | Recap
Notes: Montgomery gets their first win of the season and are now 1-2... Jake McGee tossed five scoreless innings in his return to the Biscuits. He allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3... Justin Garcia got the win in relief, as the only run came on a John Matulia RBI triple in the 6th... Paul Phillips got the 2-inning save... Emeel Salem was on base four times with 2 singles and 2 walks... Cody Strait, Drew Anderson, and Matulia also had 2 hits each...
The Leftovers: Jake McGee wasn't dominant, but he more than got the job done with 5 shutout innings. He threw 70 pitches, 42 for strikes(60%). According to GameDay, he got 8 swinging strikes. All of those 8 came in his first 2.1 innings, so it's possible his stuff slipped a little bit the second time through the order...

Charlotte Stone Crabs 5, Palm Beach Cardinals 3
Box | Recap
Notes: Charlotte begins the year 3-0... Joseph Cruz wasn't exactly sharp(4 walks, 2 strikeouts), but allowed only 1 earned run over 5 innings of work... Neil Schenk struck out 4 in two scoreless relief innings... Josh Satow got the win, striking out 3 in his two scoreless innings... Anthony Scelfo went 4-5 with an RBI... Reid Fronk and Jake Jefferies each hit a triple... Matt Sweeney went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts. He also committed a fielding error at 3rd base... Kyeong Kang went 1-5
The Leftovers: The Stone Crabs flexed their bullpen muscle again, getting four shutout innings from Neil Schenk and Josh Satow. With those two and also Marquis Fleming and Zach Quate, the Crabs have a big advantage in the second halves of games... Reid Fronk is hitting .556 after three games. If he shows his 2009 .201 batting average is in the rearview mirror, he could get a mid-season promotion to Montgomery...

Bowling Green Hot Rods 5, Fort Wayne TinCaps 1
Box | Recap
Notes: Bowling Green picked up their first win and are 1-2... Shane Dyer allowed one run in 5 innings of work. He didn't struck out 1 and didn't issue a walk... Matt Stabelfeld got the win in relief, and Scott Shuman got the 2-inning save, striking out 2 and walking 2... The game was tied at 1 until the Hot Rods put up a 3-spot in the 8th inning with a walked-in run, a Julio Cedeno sac fly, and a Mayo Acosta RBI double... Brett Nommensen, Chris Murrill, and Acosta each had multiple hits...
The Leftovers: Tyler Bortnick and Ty Morrison each had the day off... Brett Nommensen and Chris Murrill are hitting .583 and .500, respectively...

  1. I really, really don't want to write about yesterday's game with Norfolk, but may later on. Matt Joyce was hit in left elbow. He was due to sit out today anyhow, so, if all goes well, he will be back in the lineup against Gwinnett on Monday.

  2. Update: Matt's fine. He could have played today.
