South Bend, IN – Starting pitcher Wilking Rodriguez picked up where he left off last Friday night, throwing six strong innings in South Bend on Wednesday. Unfortunately, he was matched pitch-for-pitch by South Bend’s Chase Anderson as the Silver Hawks beat the Hot Rods, 3-0. The loss is the Hot Rods sixth straight and their first shutout loss of the season. They are 0-5 on their current six game road trip with the finale coming up on Thursday night.

Rodriguez (0-1) tied his career-high with six innings, matching a feat he accomplished last Friday night against West Michigan. He allowed a total of two runs, only one earned, on five hits. He only struck out two batters but he walked just one in the process.

South Bend scored its first run against Rodriguez in the third inning, putting runners at the corners with one out. Rodriguez delivered a pick-off throw to first base, but Eligio Sonoqui couldn’t handle the throw, resulting in an error and a run as Errol Hollinger scored from third base. Two innings later, the Silver Hawks struck again getting consecutive two-out hits, including a run-scoring single from Matt Davidson to make it 2-0.

Anderson, meanwhile, was flat-out dominating for South Bend. He retired the first eight batters he faced before hitting Diogenes Diaz in the third, followed by a single from Dustin Biell. In total, he gave up just two hits over 6.2 innings. He struck out a career-high seven, walking just one for his first win of the season.

Deivis Mavarez pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for the Hot Rods, retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh. Kirby Yates gave up a triple and a sacrifice fly in the eighth, capping off the scoring.
