4/24: The Rundown

Durham Bulls 5, Gwinnett Braves 4
Box | Recap
Notes: Durham won their 8th in a row, improving to 13-3... Jeremy Hellickson wasn't sharp, allowing 9 hits over 3.2 innings. He allowed 3 runs, walked 3, and only struck out 1... Brian Baker got his third win of the season with 4.1 strong relief innings, allowing just a run... Joaquin Benoit got the save... Fernando Perez had 3 hits, while Elliot Johnson, Justin Ruggiano, Chris Richard, and Joe Dillon each had 2... Ruggiano had a home run and drove in 3...
The Leftovers: Let's just chalk it up to an off night for Hellickson. He still got a decent amount of swinging strikes, but his control was way off... Desmond Jennings had another night off. I suppose they're easing into him playing every day coming off the wrist injury...

Chattanooga Lookouts 6, Montgomery Biscuits 1
Box | Recap
Notes: Montgomery fell to 7-8... Jeremy Hall walked 4 and struck out 1, but all 3 runs he allowed over 5 innings were unearned as Greg Sexton and Matt Fields each committed an error... Eduardo Morlan allowed 3 earned runs in 3 innings of relief... The Biscuits lone run came in the 9th on a Fields RBI double...
The Leftovers:

Charlotte Stone Crabs 8, Palm Beach Cardinals 1
Box | Recap
Notes: Charlotte improved to 7-6... Frank De Los Santos walked 3 and didn't strike out a hitter but allowed just 1 run in 6 innings of work... Zach Quate struck out 3 in 2 scoreless relief innings... Henry Wrigley and Anthony Scelfo both drove in 2 runs... Matt Sweeney was 1-4 with a walk... Tim Beckham went 0-5... Kyeong Kang picked up 2 hits in 5 at bats...
The Leftovers: Tim Beckham is batting .129(4-31) and has a strikeout in all 9 games he's appeared in... Zach Quate on the season: 8 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 11 strikeouts...

Lake County Captains 3, Bowling Green Hot Rods 2
Box | Recap
Notes: Bowling Green dropped to 3-13... Alex Colome turned in 6 very strong innings, striking out 9 and walked 1. He allowed 2 runs(1 earned)... Alex Koronis got the loss, allowing a run in relief... Kirby Yates struck out the side in his inning of relief... Bowling Green got 10 hits, but could only push two runs across... Chris Murrill, Mark Thomas, and Julio Cedeno each had 2 hits... Thomas and Ryan Weigand had the Hot Rods RBIs...
The Leftovers: Where in the world is the offense for the Hot Rods?

  1. Take a look at the walk to strike out ratio. The OBP for these guys are very low.

With all that speed they need to figure out a way to steal first base. I think half the hits for the OF are bunts. Not much pop in those bats.

  2. How soon will Zach Quate be promoted?

I am also going to give Tim Beckham some time.

  3. Re: Jennings. If given the chance, manager Montoyo keeps a rotation schedule for the position players. He can afford it at the moment since he's got a lot of guys who can play a lot of different positions. 4 on, 1 off is pretty much routine, unless Tampa has dictated an approach for a particular player. I'll be doing a piece on this eventually. Local slang -- the Montoyo merry-go-round. So we can hope that Jennings is feeling OK and that this is routine. Rashad Eldridge, on the other hand, has not played in quite a while and Bulls have not been very forthcoming on why not.
