Tyler Hissey On Desmond Jennings

Desmond JenningsTyler Hissey's latest article in the Baseball Prospectus Idol contest focused on two prospects, Montgomery Biscuits CF Desmond Jennings and Mike Stanton of the Marlins organization. Here's a little of what Tyler wrote about Jennings:
If hitting for power never becomes part of his skill set, though, Jennings still projects to be an above-average leadoff hitter who offers plus defense at a premium position. If the scouting reports are accurate, the runs he'll save with his glove alone will make him a valuable commodity.
...
Jennings has little left to prove at Montgomery (see chart below), so expect him to jump a level come mid-summer. And if he keeps producing, the organization may have to make a decision on their outfield status for 2010: Carl Crawford, a tremendous left-field asset when factoring in defense, is due to make $11.25M if his option is picked up, recently promoted Matt Joyce has produced at Triple-A, and Fernando Perez will return from injury. Plus, incumbent center fielder B.J. Upton is expected to get expensive going year-to-year until free agency.
Best of luck to Tyler in the contest.

  1. Will the Rays be using him as a CF or RF in 2010 if they keep Crawford? I think Upton has the arm to slide over to right, but then what do you do with Joyce? Perhaps Joyce DH's against righties and Burrell against lefties. Perez becomes the fourth or fifth OF so he can simply play once in a while when he returns from injury. I guess it's a good problem to have!

  2. Tyler didn't predict what the Rays will do, so I won't put words in his mouth. To me, it seems to be getting less and less likely Crawford is here in 2010. As you said, it's a good problem to have.
