Rays 11th Round Pick - 341st Overall: Travis Flores

BaseballAmerica:(ranked #17 in Arizona)
With his big power, first baseman Travis Flores might have the best single tool in the state's high school class. He won the Power Showcase home run derby last winter. But he's a one-dimensional player, and scouts are worried his power will show only in BP at the pro level because he has trouble recognizing offspeed pitches and breaking balls. Defensively, he's limited to first. He is committed to Arizona State.

  3. He is way overrated!

He won't even make the ASU team.

He is very slow and not able to hit good pitching.

Rays scouts drooled on HR derby bp showcase

  4. 1B?? he doesn't even play 1st base. He struggled at 3b and struggled in the state playoffs.

Are you kidding me 11th round!!!

    He will be a bust.

Poor scouting on the Rays part

  5. great base ball player. He'll hit the big times. A real down to earth guy. He knows his stuff. He's only 17 years old, just wait until his out of college. He'll go first round.

  6. Phenomenal player...big powerhouse hitter. This kid is going to go far. He's got a good attitude and an all-around team player mentality.

  7. This kid is going to make a big name for him self and the team at hand. Just wait and see.

  8. The reason he won the Power Showcase is simple because of his talent, only loser have negative things to say. To him all have to say is stay strong! Tampa Bay Rays did a great job in picking this young man up, he will prove to them he is the best!

  9. Kid will hit 50 one year in the big leagues...biggest steal of the draft.

  10. Sounds like Pena already with the Rays.

  11. Pena bats left and throw left, and is 32yrs old sounds like someone needs to keep track of there stats a bit better! Travis is young and strong, and will prove him self to be a great asset! Sounds to me like someone is jealous.

  12. dude I ws referring to how Pena is mostly HRs and K's and I'm saying this dude sounds like that seeing as it says power is his only tool and I'm making an educated guess that he K's a lot because most power hitters do. I know he is young and can become better. And I'm sorry this report doesnt say he is right handed. Sorry if I offended anyone.

  13. Good banter here on the board.

Funny how so many have numerous accounts of what he will be or has done.

Rays did okay job, but who can't scout someone who hits HR's in batting practice. He will not hit the off speed stuff and his home runs have been against sub par pitching. Batting practice anyone can hit the long ball, but this year he struggled and guess what there were many others on his HS team that were better than him and did not get the looks. They won the state title because of their catcher, and two stud arms as well as a freshman RF, best CF and LF and a scrappy SS.

He got what he got and good for him.

Let's just say that the entire High School team should be on a major league team being signed right now.

Good Luck to this young man and it's time to work hard and do your best!

Welcome to the best division in baseball...AL East!!

  14. Seems to me that the Rays have done a great job with building a first class baseball team, im sure that they looked at every aspect of a player befor adding anyone. If history has shown us anything its that everyone has a time and a place, so great job on scouting out a awesome young new player. Time to shine Travis! With hard work come the great rewards.

  15. Best of luck, rays got a great player! U,P

  16. The Rays look at all aspects of a player...Can you say Performance Enhancing Drugs? Once he is forced off the juice he will struggle.

Sad to see but facts are facts.

  17. Ian Kendall RHP 5th round pick signed for $250K...This kid signs for more in the 11th Round??

    What is up with that?

Should have gone to ASU to recognize off speed pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Performance Enhancing Drugs? Really you don't think the Rays checked for that? Have you seen Travis, father? He got his size from ( Genetics ) and hard work!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Did you not see why he struggled most of the season. He was aware that the RAYS would be testing and off prior to the test. he has taken them since 8th grade. His father's size means nothing. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it was widely known he used...his brother is also now using. Hey whatever works to get the $$, but to cheat is wrong.

    Facts are facts.

Time will tell. Wish him the best.

  20. Easy there Napoleon, let me guess the only people who ever told you that you did a good job was your mom and dad! Out side of them, you will never make it in the world of professional sports. So trashing someone with words is all you will ever be able to do! That being said I'm sure the National Inquirier is looking for you!

  21. Who ever thinks Travis is on the juice hasn't seen Travis's uncles. On his dad's side the family calls Marc the runt of the family. Baseball talent comes from the Flores family, just check out his dad's stat in high school. Can you say jealous.

First off, comments are both good and bad and you need to take all of them not just the good one's. It's life and that is how people are. Second, Don't assume you know who made the comment because I have never been one to hide behind anything nor anyone. That is the issue with these boards/blogs, etc. in that people have the opportunity to say things they feel and use "anonymous". This is the first I have seen this comment board and only knew about it from your facebook page. Here are my comments on the matter. I have watched Travis since he was 11 years old and have been telling everyone I know both here and back home in Boston that he will someone day get drafted and star in the big leagues. I have enjoyed watching him play and know that he works very hard at it. He is also one hell of a kid that would do anything for his teammates and community. If you are going to write slanderous things on any message board make sure you have the correct person. My comments on the AZ Baseball Network are widely known and I have talked to all I have written about to their face or in private messages to them. I have battled for Desert Ridge and supported the baseball team for many years and will continue to do so. If you have any issues with that say them to my face. Also why would I be jealous of any other player besides my own kid. I do not need anyone's praises or good comments to know how good he is.

  30. I can't say enough how proud I am of you Travis! The first part of your journey to realize your dreams has come to a close. Your opportunities may have been limitied in the GCL-----use that as a motivator in preparing for next season. There is only one man's opinion that matters and he's the one looking back at you in the mirror! Meet every challenge as you always have and I know that you will prevail. Work hard, keep smiling, and kick it's ass every chance you get!

  31. Proud to be your uncle, well Travis be ready for next year, im sure that it will be a great year for you. Take all that you have learned and remember all of the challenges that you had befor you and be ready to apply them to the new year ahead. As far a the comments both good and bad, only you can changes the future, never let fear stand in you way of where you want to go and who you want to be.Your family and friends will always be behind you. U.P

  32. P.E. drugs? are you kidding me? I've played with Travis for over five years and know him better than that. He's gonna hit it big when he gets his chance, so watch out. And @whoever metnioned the rest of the Desert Ridge team, agreed. That whole team will easily play at the next level. Pat Herrera did a hell of a job coaching that team for a long time, it wont be long before he's at the next level either.

  33. This man will go all the way to the top!Remember to start strong and finish strong!

  34. Well time to keep the banter coming. What's eveyones predictions this year?

  35. Travis has baseball in his blood!!! His grandfather played a semi-pro farm team during his high school years the late 50"s...had to get state approval to do so and could not accept pay. Then after college played for the semi-pro farm team in Iowa. Had to quit due to a trick knee. Travis don't let all the negative stuff stop you from your dream. You never took drugs and the people who posted that don't even know you! If they were a real person... they would not have to post their name as anonyamous.
