Minor Moves: Gomez, Simas

The Rays have signed free agent Roberto R. Gomez, a 20 year-old righthanded pitcher out of the Dominican Republic. He was assigned to DSL Rays, where he started and won in his professional debut yesterday. In 6.0 innings he allowed 5 hits, 3 runs (only one earned), no walks and struck out 4. His given name is Roberto Ezequiel Gomez (no idea where the "R" comes from) and he is listed at 6'5", 178 pounds.

Per Matt Eddy, the Rays have released catcher Travis Simas. The 22 year-old appeared in 32 games for the GCL Rays in 2009, hitting .191/.318/.247 in 89 AB's. The Rays signed him as an undrafted free agent in June of 2009 out of the University of Nevada-Reno, where he earned first team All-Western Athletic Conference honors his senior season.

[Updated to add:] RHRP Justin Garcia has been assigned to the Durham Bulls from the Montgomery Biscuits. The 23 year-old was drafted by the Rays in the 25th round of the 2007 draft out of Western Nevada CC. Here are his career pitching stats:

  1. Really sad to see Simas go. He's a truly great individual and one of the nicest guys I've had the honor of meeting while checking out the lower minors guys. He was always one to ask me how I was doing and ask about how my life outside of photography was going. I'll miss seeing him around. This means that the nicest two guys from the GCL last year, Hunter Pace and Travis, are gone. Baseball's a tough sport man.

  2. Nick,

More amazing they draft a catcher who was 9th on his Division II team in hitting. No doubt a real prospect.
