Errors, Sloppy Play Lead to Biscuits Loss

John Matulia was the only Biscuit to record multiple hits in Thursday's loss. [Game recap provided by Biscuits broadcaster Joe Davis.]

The Biscuits (16-11) committed a season-high four errors, and the Jacksonville Suns (17-10) launched three home runs to squash the Biscuits by a final of 9-3 on Thursday at Riverwalk Stadium.

Montgomery got on the board in the first when Chris De La Cruz doubled with one out and scored on an Osvaldo Martinez fielding error to make it 1-0.

Alex Torres tossed the first two frames without allowing a run while striking out three. But in the third, the Suns heated up. Ryan Curry smashed a two-run shot to put Jacksonville in front 2-1, then the Suns scored on an error, a single from Tim Torres, and a double from Javier Guzman to make it 5-1.

The Biscuits would trim the deficit in half in the fourth, with Chris Nowak taking a leadoff walk then scoring on a Matt Fields single, and Greg Sexton driving home Nevin Ashley with a fielder’s choice bounce out, making it 5-3.

Jacksonville scored once in the fifth, then two in the sixth on a Mike Stanton home run that cleared the scoreboard in left field. They finished the scoring with a solo-shot from Torres in the seventh.

John Matulia was the only Biscuit to record multiple hits, going 2-4. Every member of the Suns’ lineup reached, with four tallying multiple hits.

Alex Sanabia (3-0) took the win for the Suns, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings of work. The five-run third was enough to chase Torres (0-3) from the game, leaving having surrendered five runs (only two earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking three.

The Biscuits, now a game back in the South Division, send RHP Rayner Oliveros to the mound on Friday against Jacksonville’s RHP Jose Rosario at 7:05.
