Rays Notes, Signings, Releases, Injury News

D.J. JonesB.J. Upton, recovering from left shoulder surgery, went 0-for-5 yesterday as the DH in a minor league game. He is off today, will play 7 innings with 5 AB in a camp game on Saturday, and will DH on Sunday in a camp game.

WSFA Channel 12 News in Montgomery, AL, has this video of native son OF D.J. Jones.

Stacy Long says the Rays have signed Chip Cannon and expects him to begin the year with the Montgomery Biscuits:
First baseman Chip Cannon has signed with the Rays, who have assigned the 27-year-old to the Montgomery work list. At this point, that signals he's likely headed to the Biscuits to start the season. Cannon hit .231 in 80 games last year at Triple-A Syracuse in the Toronto organization. He was an eighth-round draft pick in 2004 from The Citadel.
Stacy also says the Rays have released Chris Kelly and Travis Risser:
Right-handed relievers Chris Kelly and Travis Risser were released today by the Rays. Kelly was at high-Class A Vero Beach last year. Risser split time between low-A Columbus and short-season Hudson Valley.
One last rather troubling note from Stacy on RHRP Ryan Reid:
Biscuits relief pitcher Ryan Reid won't start the season on time after elbow pain this spring set him back two weeks. Reid worked an inning in an exhibition game today, but it was only his second inning of the spring. The right-hander said he started feeling pain in the Arizona Fall League last year, probably because of the taxing season.
