Charlotte Stone Crabs Rally but Fall Short to Sarasota

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Stone Crabs tried to pull off a come from behind win against the Sarasota Reds but fell short by the score of 7-5 at Charlotte Sports Park. With the loss, the Stone Crabs fall to 4-7 on the season.

Alex Cobb struggled early in the first by giving up three runs to Sarasota. Cobb hit two batters and walked two more in the inning. Yonder Alonso delivered a two run double to score Justin Reed and Jake Kahaulelio. Cobb walked Devin Mesoraco to score Alonso and Sarasota took the lead 3-0.

Charlotte got on the board in the third inning as Omar Luna led off the inning with a double to right. Pedro Powell followed up with a sacrifice bunt to advance Luna to third base and Shawn O’Malley drove in the run with a bunt single to score Luna to put the Stone Crabs within two runs.

Sarasota added to their lead in the fourth as Daniel Perales started the inning with a double. Justin Reed followed up with a single on a bunt to advance Perales to third. Reed then stole second giving the Reds runners at second and third for Justin Tordi who grounded out to second, allowing Perales to score. Yonder Alonso kept the inning going for Sarasota as he hit a two run homer, putting Sarasota ahead 6-1 and ending Alex Cobb’s night.

Rayner Oliveros took over the mound for Charlotte and quieted the Sarasota offense while the Stone Crabs offense began to heat up. Cody Cipriano led off the fourth inning with a triple. Omar Luna drove him home with a ground ball to second. The runs kept coming in the fifth as Emeel Salem began the inning with a double to right. Shawn O’Malley followed with a single to advance Salem to third. Salem later scored off a sac fly by Gregory Sexton.

Sarasota posted an insurance run in the eight inning as Justin Reed hit his second triple of the season and was drove home by an RBI single by Justin Tordi. The Stone Crabs rallied in the ninth inning by scoring two runs but Philippe Valiquette closed the door and gave Sarasota the win 7-5.

Alex Cobb got the loss, pitching 3.1 innings surrendering 6 runs (5 of them earned) on 6 hits striking out 2 while walking 3. Rayner Oliveros made his first appearance has a Stone Crab giving up only 1 hit in 3.2 innings. Paul Phillips gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 1 inning and Kevin Boggan pitched a scoreless ninth. Luis Montano was the winning pitcher for Sarasota and Philippe Valiquette recorded the save.

What Went Right: Hitting Streaks; Greg Sexton streak continued to 9 games and Matt Fields extended his streak to 8 games. Rayner Oliveros; sharp in his debut only giving up 1 hit in 3.2 IP.

What Went Wrong: Alex Cobb; gave up 6 runs in 3.1 IP while struggling with control by walking 2 and hitting another 2.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs play Sarasota in game two of the three game series as Jesse Darcy (0-1, 7.00 ERA) will face Zach Stewart (0-0, 2.00 ERA).
