Minor Moves: Sweeney, Sexton

Per Stacy Long, the Montgomery Biscuits and Charlotte Stone Crabs have switched third basemen. Matt Sweeney has been promoted from Charlotte to Montgomery, and Greg Sexton has been demoted from the Biscuits to the Stone Crabs.

Sweeney, 22, is hitting .264/.345/.488 in 121 AB's for Charlotte, including 6 home runs and 9 doubles. Sweeney was acquired (along with Sean Rodriguez and Alexander Torres) from the Los Angeles Angels for Scott Kazmir last season. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the 8th round of the 2006 draft out of Magruder High School in Rockville, Maryland.

Sexton, 25, is batting .212/.336/.310 in 113 AB's for Montgomery, with 1 home run and 8 doubles. He was drafted by the Rays in the 10th round of the 2007 draft out of William & Mary.

In one other transaction involving Rays organization personnel, the Durham Bulls today announced that long time team mascot Lucky the Wonder Dog is retiring after more than seven years serving the team. The Bulls will say goodbye to Lucky during a post-game ceremony on Saturday, May 22nd following the Bulls game against Pawtucket. “Lucky has been a part of our family for several years and will be missed,” Durham Bulls General Manager Mike Birling said, “We wish him well in retirement.”

Lucky joined the team in 2003 performing on weekends for the fans. He was known for his post-game victory lap around the bases following a Bulls’ win. Lucky is owned and trained by Gene Lonsway of Chapel Hill. Lucky’s successor, Lucky Jr., will begin performing on weekend home games at the DBAP beginning on Friday, June 11th.

  1. One more - According to, Kevin Chavez has been assigned back to extended spring training from the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

So much for my guess that he'd replace Dyer in the Hot Rods rotation. At least I had Dott among my choices, albeit 4th.

  2. How about taking a look at the money the Rays have spent on talent and the results achieved.

    Beckham-$3,000,000(I think)

But they won't have the money to sign Crawford.

What a way to run a company!!

  3. thay actually spent 6.15 million on Beckham

  4. Correct, re Beckham's signing bonus. Was 6.15 million.
