PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs dropped a close series finale to the Bradenton Marauders 7-5 in front of a crowd of 5,797 at Charlotte Sports Park on Saturday night.

The Stone Crabs players wore pink uniforms to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Night that were auctioned off during the game to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The official donation amount will be announced on Monday, but a rough estimate had the Charlotte organization raising more than $3,500 on the night.

Charlotte starter Frank De Los Santos (4-1) picked up his first loss of the season after giving up seven runs (six earned) in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Bradenton's Jeremy Farrell started his big night early, belting a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI double in the fifth. He finished 3-for-5 on the night.

Charlotte scored runs in the second and third innings off an RBI double from Reid Fronk and a solo homer from Tim Beckham in the third inning off Bradenton starter Nathan Adcock.

The Marauders offense proved too much though with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. De Los Santos gave up two runs before being pulled for Michael Jarman with one out in the sixth inning.

The Stone Crabs made one last push with three runs in the fifth but never managed to get over the hump.

The team will enjoy a league-wide off day on Sunday before hitting the road for a six-day road trip with four games in Lakeland and three games in Palm Beach. The Crabs will return to Charlotte Sports Park for an epic 10-game homestand on Sunday, May 16. Visit StoneCrabsBaseball.com for upcoming promotions.

  3. Does T-Beck look at all afeected by his wrist when he plays(because of his wrist injury)?Offense and Defense. I really hope so because besides this HR tonight, his stats are horrendous(offense and defense).

  4. This is not an easy game players take time to develop, remember that as you sit and watch a game that I'm sure you could never even get off the bench for....

  5. Be nice, it was an honest question and fair comment on his struggles so far this season. I realize Beckham is a 6 million dollar lightning rod for Rays fans, but there is no need to take shots at those who disagree with the pick (not that Anon2 did, but I can see the implicit view of that by Anon3).

Personally, as I have said before, I don't think a fair accessment can be made until after NEXT season, 2011. At that point I think we'll have an idea of where he realistically can play in the field and what he can offer offensively.

Until then (and don't rule out a breakout year in 2012, he's THAT young) it's just fanboys vs. haters. That type of argument may be what some people enjoy, but around here we (posters and commenters) tend to focus on realistic expectations in light of age, tools/upside potential, and past performance.

  6. Yep, retro to May 3rd, no word on why. The Crabs added RHP Kevin Chavez from XST. He pitched at Hudson Valley last season.
