Bowling Green, KY – Julio Cedeno continued his strong start to the month of May, picking up two more hits and a pair of RBI to lead the Hot Rods to a 5-1 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (13-13) on Wednesday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. The burly third baseman has five hits in his last two games for Bowling Green (7-19) with Wednesday’s performance earning the Hot Rods their first series victory in 2010.

Cedeno opened the scoring in the fourth inning for the Hot Rods against Fort Wayne starter Nick Greenwood (L; 2-1). Tyler Bortnick began the inning with a single, took second when Brett Nommensen was hit by a pitch, and ended up at third after a double play from Ryan Wiegand. After a walk to Dustin Biell, Cedeno stepped up and lined a single to center field to score Bortnick and give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Cedeno figured prominently again as Bowling Green scored two more runs. The inning began with a walk by Tyler Bortnick, who was thrown out trying to steal second base. Nommensen followed win a walk of his own, taking third when the next batter Wiegand singled into right field. On the play, however, Nommensen hurt his leg sliding into third base, leaving the game for Robi Estrada.

Estrada wouldn’t be on third base long as Biell came up and laid down a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Estrada and moving Wiegand to second for a 2-0 Hot Rods lead. Cedeno made it 3-0 with another single to center field, driving home Wiegand from second base.

Leading 3-0, that was it for Hot Rods starter Alexander Colome. He was far from his best today but he still went six shutout innings, giving up just two hits. He walked a career-high six batters, striking out only three, but still picked up his first win of the season. The right-hander is now 1-2 and has surrendered just two earned runs in 26 innings at home (0.69 ERA).

Fort Wayne rallied for a run against Jairo De La Rosa in the seventh inning, but Bowling Green answered right back with two more in their half of the inning. With one out, Ty Morrison walked and stole second base. Chris Murrill followed with a single to put runners at first and third. After Murrill swiped second Tyler Bortnick turned on a pitch and laced a double into the left field corner, scoring both runners to make it 5-1.

Cedeno finished the day 2-4 with two RBI, giving him six hits in 11 at-bats in the month of May. Bortnick also had a pair of hits while driving in two runs of his own. As a team, Bowling Green finished 4-12 with runners in scoring position. They also tacked on two more two-out runs, giving them eight in the last three games.
