5/4: The Rundown

Durham Bulls 10, Rochester Red Wings 2
Box | Recap
Notes: Durham snapped a 4-game losing streak and improved to 16-10... Jeremy Hellickson struck out 8 and didn't walk a batter over 7 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits... Mike Ekstrom pitched the final 2 innings... Fernando Perez and Joe Dillon each homered... Dillon, Hank Blalock, Elliot Johnson, and Jose Lobaton all had two hits...
The Leftovers: Desmond Jennings can play defense and run, but I guess he still can't swing the bat... Hellickson has 35 strikeouts to 7 walks in 35 innings on the year...

Montgomery Biscuits 5, West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx 4
Montgomery Biscuits 3, West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx 1
Box 1 | Box 2 | Recap
Notes: Montgomery swept the pair of 7-inning games to improve to 14-10... David Newmann struggled with his control and allowed 4 runs in the 1st inning of game one. He walked 4 and struck out 1 in 4 innings... Dane De La Rosa got the win with Matt Gorgen picking up the save... Cody Cipriano hit a 3-run home run... Darin Downs shut out the Diamond Jaxx for 6 innings in game 2, striking out 5 and walking 2... Montgomery had only 4 hits in game 2, but it was enough...
The Leftovers: Darin Downs has been very effective for the Biscuits: 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings, with a 23-5 K-BB rate... He's a candidate for a mid-season promotion to Durham...

Charlotte Stone Crabs 6, St. Lucie Mets 1
Box | Recap
Notes: Charlotte improved to 14-9... Frank De Los Santos improved to 4-0 with 7 effective innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 9... Neil Schenk struck out 5 over the final 2 innings... Matt Sweeney was 1-3 with a double and 2 walks... Tim Beckham had the night off... Jake Jefferies walked twice and drove in 2 runs...
The Leftovers: Frank De Los Santos is a sleeper prospect. He gets a good amount of ground balls, is very effective against lefties, and has struck out 16 over his last two starts...

Dayton Dragons 10, Bowling Green Hot Rods 5
Box | Recap
Notes: Bowling Green fell to 5-19... Wilking Rodriguez wasn't his sharpest, but battled to allow 3 runs over 5 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 1... Deivis Mavarez allowed 6 runs in 1.1 innings of relief... Julio Cedeno went 3-4 with a pair of doubles... Ty Morrison was 1-3 with an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base...

  1. Stacy Long has a nice article with Newmann re his injury recovery, did it set him back?, etc. You know where to go: the Montgomery Advertiser Sports Section

On FDLS, and can we just agree on that as his name, Richard can be RDLS, but Frank De Los Santos is now known as FDLS? If the K's keep up...

My 2nd fav Venezuelan gets 3 hits, two for 2B's, gotta be the offense in Bowling Green breaking out. Thanks for mentioning him KG. Young guy making a leap forward, hope it works out.

  2. Still wondering if/when pitchers Dott,Fuller, Hill, Ayers will be sent up to BG from extended, along with last year's Renegades- Otero, Davis, Cohen, Reynolds....or are they all coming back to HV this coming season? Seems like BG needs some changes somewhere?????

  3. Updates on Bulls' walking wounded -- Jennings, Ruggiano, Chavez. And promotion of Stone Crab Luna at my blog.

  4. Anon: My guess is that Bowling Green's roster is pretty much set. It seems like some of those guys might have been ready for full-season ball, but they'll all likely be with HV.

RE: Luna, Durham probably needs a MIF for some reason

  7. Regarding Luna. Amazing how an organization can take a guy who had an .185 avg. in A+ Ball last year, place him back in A+, have him hit .056 and promote him to AA. If he can get his average down to .020 maybe he can move on to AAA by July 1st.

  8. Luna is an organizational filler player. They promote him around the system wherever an infielder is needed for a short period. He's not at the higher levels because he's a prospect, it's just the opposite: they don't want to send guys who are prospects all over the place for a few days at a time.
