Derek Dietrich Snags Second Top Player Honors

Via press release from Tom Gauthier of the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

For the second time this season, Hot Rods shortstop Derek Dietrich has been honored as the Midwest League’s Player of the Week. He becomes the first player in team history to win multiple weekly honors as he ravaged the opposition for the seven-day stretch ending Sunday, August 22.

Dietrich’s weekly line included a .333 batting average as he delivered seven hits in twenty-one at-bats over a six-game stretch. More impressively, six of those seven hits went for extra-bases, including two doubles and four home runs smacked over a stretch of four consecutive days. The Parma, OH, native drove home six runs and scored five more to help the Hot Rods to a 3-3 record during the week. Additionally he walked four times, including a career-best three walks on Saturday night in Great Lakes.

A 2011 Midwest League All-Star, Dietrich has strung together a strong second half, surging his name among the league leaders in several offensive categories. He is hitting a .311 (64-206) since the All-Star Break, leading the team with 15 doubles, 14 home runs, and 38 RBI in 54 games. On the season, he leads the Hot Rods with a .290 average and a franchise-best 21 home runs, a number that swelled when he homered in five consecutive games from August 14 through August 19 at Bowling Green Ballpark. He is second on the club with 29 doubles and 73 RBI. He is also the club record holder with 54 extra-base hits with 15 games remaining.

Among the Midwest League, Dietrich’s name dots the leader board in home runs (2nd), extra-base hits (2nd), total bases (2nd), slugging percentage (4th), OPS (5th), RBI (6th), hits (6th), doubles (8th), and batting average (9th).

Dietrich was previously honored along with pitcher Victor Mateo for the week of July 4-10.
