Draft Signing News: Matt Ramsey

It sounds like RHP Matt Ramsey, the Rays 19th round pick out of the University of Tennessee, will be signing:
[Vols coach Dave] Serrano said Matt Ramsey will undergo surgery and then sign with the Tampa Bay Rays.

  1. Great news. I really hoped for him to sign. Great reports about his velocity.

  2. Any news about Riccio Torrez? Assignment?

  3. Nope. From here on out guys who sign may or may not even play this year, esp pitchers. Usually the last minute guys (hitters) just see a few games in GCL, if at all.

Only things I've heard lately is Taylor Guerrieri is using possible juco option as leverage. He's already a South Carolina commit, but doesn't figure to make 3 years in NCAA. Think he will sign, very little doubt.

Don't think 37th round RHP Tanner Poppe is signing. The Newport Gulls, his New England Collegiate Baseball League summer team, was swept out of the playoffs Thursday and he's heading back to Kansas (literally). He had a 3.40 ERA in 39.2 IP, 37 hits, 36-12 SO-BB.

  4. Guerreri and Mahtook are the obvious most signs but I really hope to see Goeddel, Mitsui and because we might as well sign all the 1st rounders, Garvin to sign. I have a good feeling about most of them, I haven't heard much about Goedell at all and Mitsui has been 50/50 since the draft.

  5. I'm not sure where to post this, but do you have any idea why Hudson Valley now has 4 catchers- Rice, Oliveraz, Holloway, and recently promoted to HV Segovia, PLUS Biagini- who caught during Spring Training- I know that Oliveraz has been out for awhile, but that's a lot of catchers.

  6. I read somewhere, probably one of McMann's recent articles, that Segovia is primarily for his bat. Was injured I think and would be catcher only for partial games. Just read it recently so should still apply. Always need extra Cs anyway for bullpen and guys throwing on off days and emergency.
