Rays have deal with second rounder Derek Dietrich

According to Tony Fabrizio of the Tampa Tribune, the Rays have reached an agreement with second round draft pick Derek Dietrich, a shortstop out of Georgia Tech. The deal is subject to a physical. Dietrich is at tonight's Rays-Blue Jays game in Tampa and will report to Hudson Valley on Sunday.

  3. mlb.com confirms he signed, pending passing a physical of course. It also says he will report to the Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday.

  5. Every contract is a minor-league deal. As a general rule, college players will be eligible for the rule 5 draft after 4 years(so the 2013-2014 off-season) unless he's added to the 40-man roster. Once added to the 40-man roster, his "option" years start. So say they add him to the 40-man roster after the 2012 season. If/when he goes down to the minors in 2013, that would be an option year.

    That's my very basic understanding of it. For high school guys it's the same thing, except 5 years in the organization and not 4.
