Hudson Valley Renegades fall 4-1 to Aberdeen Ironbirds

The Game: Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Aberdeen Ironbirds 4-1 on Friday night at Ripken Stadium. The Renegades struck first by scoring in the second inning. Eli Sonoqui led off the inning with a double to left and then advanced to third on a fly out by Elias Ortero. Sonoqui later scored on a wild pitch by Aberdeen’s Nicholas Haughian to put the Renegades ahead 1-0.

Aberdeen battled back to ties the game in the bottom of the third. Justin Dalles hit an RBI single to center that scored Brian Conley to tie the game 1-1.

The tie held until the bottom of the seventh when the Ironbirds struck for three runs. Richard D Oleo got it going with a double to center. Oleo moved to third on a sac bunt by Brian Conley and later scored on a wild pitch by Renegade’s pitcher Jordi Amargos. The Ironbirds got two more runs in the inning off a two run homer by Brian Ward to give them their 4-1 margin of victory.

Kevin Chavez pitched 4 innings an allowed 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3 in the no decision. Aaron Dott followed in relief and pitched 2 shutout innings while allowing 1 hit and striking out 2 and walked 2. Jordi Amargos suffered the loss by giving up 3 runs on 2 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1 in 2/3 of an inning. James Hill finished the game by throwing 1 1/3 innings of no hit baseball while striking out and walking 1. Jose Barajas was the winning pitcher for Aberdeen.

What Went Right: Diogenes Luis; only Renegade to record multiple hits by going 2-4.

What Went Wrong: Mark Thomas; 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts while committing an error on the field.

A Look Ahead: The Renegades and Ironbirds close out the series on Saturday night at Ripken Stadium.

  1. If you get a chance, check into the bizarre details of last night's game...long delay because there was NO POWER in Aberdeen before and DURING the game. Generators were brought in to light up the field!

  2. I saw that there was a 2 hour and 11 minute delay because of a power failure but did not know how severe it was. Good thinking by the front office and grounds crew of Aberdeen in securing the generators and keeping the game from being cancelled.

  3. Been wondering if Tampa Bay ever thought of trying David Genao in the outfield. Might work/might not, but he can't fit into 1st base slot nor catcher, so, maybe?
