Charlotte Stone Crabs sweep doubleheader with 3-0 shut-out against Sarasota Reds

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs picked up game two right where they left off in game one with dominating pitching as the shut-out the Sarasota Reds 3-0 in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader at Ed Smith Stadium.

Unlike game one, Charlotte did not wait till extra innings to score, they scored in the first inning and never looked back. John Matulia picked up a solo home run to put the Stone Crabs ahead 1-0.

The Stone Crabs put together another scoring drive in the fifth inning. Nevin Ashley led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second on the throw. Reid Fronk followed with a sac bunt to move Ashley to third. Then Ian Paxton drove Ashley home with an RBI single to left field. Paxton advanced to second on a sac bunt by Matt Hall and then to third on a throwing error. Drew Anderson drove home the second run of the inning as his sacrifice fly to center scored Paxton and gave Charlotte the 3-0 victory.

David Newmann pitched a 7 inning complete game shut-out and allowing only 3 hits with 8 strikeouts. Lance Janke was the losing pitcher for Sarasota.

What Went Right: David Newman; complete game shut-out with 8 K’s.

What Went Wrong: Nothing stands out, Stone Crabs were solid in the 3-0 win, no errors and everyone contributed one way or another.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Reds conclude the series Sunday afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium.
