Princeton Rays lose home finale to Burlington

Princeton RaysThe Game: The Princeton Rays lost their home finale to the Burlington Royals 2-1 on Tuesday at Hunnicutt Field. Burlington scored in the first inning. Jovan Pickett singled on a bunt to lead off the inning. Yowill Espinal followed with a two run homer to put the Royals ahead 2-0.

The Rays scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Julio Cedeno double to left. Jason Patton followed with an RBI double to right that scored Cedeno. But the Rays could not push across another run as they lost 2-1.

Omar Bencomo suffered the loss, pitching 3 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with a strikeout. Deivis Mavares followed, pitching 5 shut-out innings with 3 hits, 6 strikeouts and a walk. Scott Shuman pitched a no-hit ninth and struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced.

What Went Right: Jason Patton; 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Thomas Francisco; 2 for 2.

What Went Wrong: Scoring; despite having a runner in scoring position 6 times, the Rays only pushed across 1 run.

A Look Ahead: The Rays hit the road for the remainder of the 2009 season with the first stop being a single game against the Bluefield Orioles (31-30) at Bowen Field on Wednesday.
