Charlotte Stone Crabs suffer extra innings loss to Fort Myers

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone lost to the Fort Myers Miracle 5-3 in extra innings at Charlotte Sports Park. The Miracle broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Ben Revere led off the inning with a single and then was drove home on an RBI triple by Estarlin De Los Santos to give the Miracle a 1-0 lead.

Fort Myers picked up another run in the fourth inning. Jair Fernandez reached base on an error and then advanced to third on a single by Allan de San Miguel. Ben Revere followed with an RBI single to score Fernandez and increase the Miracle lead to 2-0.

The Stone Crabs battled back to tie the game in the home half of the sixth inning. Henry Wrigley doubled to right and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ryan Royster drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Stone Crabs. Shawn Williams followed with a two run double to score Wrigley and Royster, tying the game at two.

Fort Myers regained the lead in the eighth inning. Mark Dolenc singled and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Rene Leveret followed with a ground out that advanced Dolenc to third. Dolenc then scored on a ground ball by Joe Benson to give the Miracle a 3-2 advantage.

But the Stone Crabs wasted no time and matched the Miracle run in the bottom of the inning. Henry Wrigley reached base and advanced to second on errors by the Miracle defense. Shawn Williams then delivered an RBI double to score Wrigley to tie the game and force extra inning.

The game remained tied until the tenth inning. Mark Dolenc singled to right to lead off the inning. Rene Leveret was hit by a pitch to follow. Joe Benson then drove home the first run of the inning with an RBI single that scored Dolenc and moved Leveret to third. Kevin Boggan then issued an intentional walk to Deibinson Romero to load the bases. But an unintentional walk that followed to Jair Fernandez pushed across another run and the Miracle held on for the 5-3 win in ten inning.

David Newmann pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 runs (only 1 earned) on 6 hits while striking out 9. Jesse Darcy followed by pitching 2 innings and allowing 1 run on 1 hits and striking out 2 and walking 1. Kevin Boggan suffered the loss, pitching 2 innings and allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and walking 4. Joe Testa was the winning pitcher for Fort Myers.

What Went Right: Shawn Williams; drove in all three of the Stone Crabs runs by going 3 for 5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI’s.

What Went Wrong: Ryan Royster; struck out 3 times.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Miracle wrap up the series on Sunday evening at Charlotte Sports Park. This will be the final regular season meeting between the two rivals and they will meet again in the post season should the Stone Crabs make the playoffs.
