Charlotte Stone Crabs beat Miracle

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the Fort Myers Miracle 5-3 on Thursday night at Hammond Stadium. Fort Myers took the lead in the first inning. Alejandro Machado singled to third and then advanced to second on a ground out by Estarlin De Los Santos. Chris Parmelee followed with an RBI singled to left to score Machado and put the Miracle ahead 1-0.

The Miracle added to their lead in the second as Allan de San Miguel started things with a double to left field. Alexander Soto later followed with a single to left that score San Miguel and increased their lead to 2-0.

The Stone Crabs hit the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Reid Fronk and Matt Hall delivered back to back singles to put runners on the bases. Then it was a two run singled to left by Omar Luna that scored Fronk and Hall to tie the game at two.

The Stone Crabs broke the tie in the fourth inning. Nevin Ashley was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Shawn Williams followed with a single to third to advance Ashley to second. Reid Fronk then hit an RBI double to left that scored Ashley and gave the Stone Crabs a 3-2 lead.

Charlotte added two more runs in the ninth inning. Nevin Ashley drew a walk to start the inning followed by a single off the bat of Shawn Williams. Matt Hall then delivered a two run double to right that scored Ashley and Williams to increase the Stone Crabs lead to 5-2.

The Miracle posted a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Evan Bigley led off the inning with a double to right and then Joe Benson drew a walk. Ben Revere followed with a single to load the bases. Nick Romero drove home a run with a ground ball to first, scoring Bigley. But the Stone Crabs picked up the third out of the inning and held on for a 5-3 win.

Alex Cobb got the win, pitching 5 innings and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1. Tommy Rafferty pitched 2 scoreless innings and allowed a hit while striking out 3. Richard De Los Santo earned the save giving up 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1 in 2 innings worked. Santos Arias was the losing pitcher for Fort Myers.

What Went Right: Matt Hall; 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI’s and a run scored.

What Went Wrong: Heart of the order; the 3 (Anderson), 4 (Wrigley) and 5 (Royster) hitters combined to go 0 for 12 with 2 K’s.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs return home to Charlotte Sports Park on Friday to continue the series with the Miracle. Jeremy Hall will be on the mound against Steve Hirschfeld.
