Hudson Valley Renegades fall to State College 3-2 in 10 innings

Hudson Valley RenegadesThe Game: The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the State College Spikes 3-2 in extra innings on Sunday evening at Dutchess Stadium. Hudson Valley took an early lead by scoring in the first inning. Chris Murrill singles to short to lead off the inning, then advanced to second on a stolen base. Tyler Bortnick then singled to left to score Murrill and give the Renegades an early 1-0 lead.

State College tied the game in the fourth inning. Aaron Baker hit a ground rule double to give the Spikes a base runner. David Rubinstein followed with a single to short to advance Baker to third. The Rubinstein scored on an error by Eli Sonoqui on a pickoff attempt, tying th game at one run a piece.

The Spikes took the led in the seventh. Pat Irvine singled to left to lead off the inning. Andy Vasquez later singled to right to advance Irvine to third base. Miguel Mendez then drove home Irvine with an RBI single to give the Spikes a 2-1 lead.

Hudson Valley fought back to tie the game once again in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chris Murrill singled to right then found himself on third after back to back stolen bases. Following a throwing error on the steal of third, Murrill came home to tie the game and force extra innings.

State College broke the tie in the top of the tenth inning. Brock Holt led off with a triple to right. David Rubinstein then hit a sac fly to right to score Holt and give the Spikes a 3-2 lead in which they held through the home half of the tenth to win the game.

Jason McEachern pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7 in the no decision. James Hill followed, pitching 2 shut-out innings and gave up 2 hits and struck out 1 with 1 walk. Bladimir Florentino suffered the loss, allowing 1 run on 1 hit with a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Alan Knotts was the winner for State College.

What Went Right: Chris Murrill; 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored.

What Went Wrong: David Genao; 0 for 3 with 2 K’s.

A Look Ahead: The Renegades are off on Monday then begin a six game road trip with a three game series against the Tri-City Valley Cats on Tuesday at Joe Bruno Stadium.
