The Charlotte Stone Crabs in conjunction with the Florida State League have announced the participants for the Home Run Derby sponsored by My Florida MLS. The derby will take place immediately prior to the 51st Annual FSL All-Star Game presented by Under Armour on Saturday, June 16, at Charlotte Sports Park. The derby is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Eight men have been named to participate in the derby, which will feature two rounds of 10 outs apiece. Every swing is either a home run or an out. Each division will have four participants, and after all eight have completed the first round, the two players with the highest home run total will advance to the finals.
The FSL South Division participants are: Outfielder Marcell Ozuna (15) of the Jupiter Hammerheads, outfielder Cory Vaughn (12) from the St. Lucie Mets, and shortstop Derek Dietrich (6) from the host Charlotte Stone Crabs. Outfielder Oswaldo Arcia (7) of the Fort Myers Miracle has been named to replace infielder Wilmer Flores of St. Lucie.
For the FSL North Division, the hitters who will take part in the derby will be: Infielder Greg Rohan (11) and outfielder Nelson Perez (10) from the Daytona Cubs, second baseman Ryan Schimpf (7) of the Dunedin Blue Jays, and outfielder Avisail Garcia (7) of the Lakeland Flying Tigers.
“The eight players selected for the derby have certainly earned the honor, and we have no doubt that they will put on a show for the fans,” said Stone Crabs General Manager Jim Pfander. “Charlotte County is thrilled to host both the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game. It will be a great day of fun and excitement at the ballpark.”
