Where Are They Now: 2008 Unsigned Draft Picks

All this week we'll take a look at where the draft picks that the Rays haven't signed have ended up. I'll post a year each day, continuing with 2008:

/443 - Brandon Meredith, 1B, HS: Hit .383/.486/.542 as a sophomore at San Diego State University, but is only hitting .271 as a junior. He'd get drafted based on his solid numbers in years before, or he could return to school to try to improve his stock.

/623 - Ryan Carpenter, LHP, HS: Went to Gonzaga University and figures to be drafted in the top three rounds in June. Had ERAs over 5.00 his freshman and sophomore years, but has it down to 2.61 as a junior with 91 strikeouts in 82.2 innings.

/863 - Brandon Magee, OF, HS: Went to Arizona State University as a two-sport athlete. Got only 16 at-bats in 09-10 and decided to play football full-time, where he'll be a starting linebacker for the Sun Devils.

/983 - Ryan Turner, RHP, JC: Drafted here out of Midland JC, Turner was re-drafted in 2010 in the 49th round by the Atlanta Braves out of McLennan College. He's at another school this year, Tarleton State, where he's struck out 61 in 38.0 innings as the team's closer.

/923 - Greg Williams, LHP, HS: Went to Marshall University. Pitched in 2009 but missed 2010, presumably due to injury. Has pitched 16.1 innings this spring to a 6.06 ERA.

/953 - Kyle Gaedele, OF, HS: The great-nephew of the famous Eddie Gaedele, Kyle is at Valparaiso University and should be drafted in the top ten rounds this June. Hitting .319/.427/.519 and leads his team in home runs.

/983 - Kyle Hunter, LHP, HS: Drafted in the 43rd round last season by the Yankees as a draft-eligible sophomore, Hunter chose to return to Kansas State. Has a 3.57 ERA with a 65/24 K/BB ratio for the Wildcats.

/1073 - Jordan Leyland, 1B, HS: A junior at UC-Irvine, Leyland's hitting .287/.360/.415. Hit .264 in the Cape Cod League last summer.

/1104 - Kramer Champlin, RHP, HS: Went to Western Nevada College before transferring to Arizona State. Has a 3.08 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 87.2 innings for the Sun Devils.

/1133 - Anthony Haase, RHP, HS: Went to Cochise County CC in Arizona and was taken in the 17th round in 2010 by the Texas Rangers. Struck out 28 in 21.2 innings with their rookie-ball team and is in extended spring training.

/1163 - Andrew Gans, OF, HS: Committed to the College of Southern Nevada but as far as I can tell he didn't suit up for the team and no longer plays baseball.

/1193 - Sam Gaviglio, RHP, HS: Has a 1.74 ERA in 93.0 innings for the Oregon State Beavers and should be drafted in the top ten rounds in June. Has a very solid 90-21 K-BB rate.

/1223 - Brett Parson, OF, JC: Transferred to Texas A&M for his sophomore year and hit .265 in 2009. Hit .133 in 30 at bats in 2010 and has apparently given up baseball.

/1253 - Tim Clubb, RHP, College: Was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 29th round in 2009. Spent that year and a sliver of 2010 with them before being released and signing with the independent Gateway Grizzlies. Pitched 118.1 innings for them with a 3.42 ERA.

/1283 - Robert Ross, LHP, JC: Not sure where he ended up.

/1313 - Phil Pohl, C, HS: Went to Clemson University, where he's hitting .346/.401/.503. Has been the second catcher plus a 1B/OF.

/1342 - Royce Bolinger, OF, HS: Teammates with Ryan Carpenter at Gonzaga, Bolinger is hitting .300/.324/.431 for the Bulldogs this year.

/1370 - Jeff Lease, LHP, JC: Transferred to Long Beach State. In 29.2 innings, pitched to an ERA near 7.00 in 2009 and it doesn't look like he's still playing

/1397 - Christopher Matulis, LHP, HS: Pitched two seasons at LSU before transferring to Central Florida, where it seems like he red-shirted this season.

/1424 - Lath Guyer, RHP, College: Finished up his career at Mercer University, wasn't drafted again, and didn't catch on as a free agent.

/1451 - Kash Kalkowski, RHP, HS: Made the move from the mound to the field after two shoulder surgeries, and he's hitting .298/.380/.464 for the Nebraska Cornhuskers this year.

/1478 - Kyle Peterson, C, HS: Went to Chandler-Gilbert Community College before transferring to Eastern Michigan. Hitting just .191

  1. Doesnt look like they are missing any of these signings. A few you project in top 10 rounds but this is still 3 years later.
