Hudson Valley Renegades fall to Lowell Spinners 6-3

The Game: The Hudson Valley Renegades lost a hard fought game to the Lowell Spinners 6-3 on Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium. The Spinners took the lead in the third inning. Derrik Gibson singled to right to get the inning started, then later advanced to second on a passed ball. Ryan Westmoreland singled to advance Gibson to third. Chris McGuiness followed with a two run double to put Lowell ahead 2-0.

Hudson Valley battled back in the bottom of the inning. Dustin Biell tripled to right field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Murrill. With the run, Hudson Valley pulled within one run of the lead.

The Renegades posted another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brett Nommensen singled to lead off the inning. Nommensen advanced to second on a ground out by Elias Otero and then to third on a wild pitch. Then another wild pitch by Yeiper Castillo allowed Nommensen to score and tie the game at two.

Lowell broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning. Ronald Bermudez laid down a bunt for a single to start the inning. Alex Hassan followed with a single to left moving Bermudez to third. Joantoni Garcia then plated Bermudez with a ground ball to second giving Lowell a lead 3-2.

The Renegades came back to tie the game again in the seventh inning. Mark Thomas led off with a walk to start the inning. Thomas advanced to second on a ground ball by Eli Sonoqui and then to third on a sac bunt by Brett Nommensen. Elias Otero followed with a sac fly to center that scored Thomas to tie the game at three.

The game stayed tied at three until the top of the ninth when the Lowell Spinners pushed across three runs. Joantoni Garcia led off the inning with a walk. Wilfred Pichardo singled to short to give Lowell runners on first and second. Derrik Gibson laid down a sac bunt but a throwing error by James Hill allowed Gibson to reach safely and Garcia to score. Ryan Westmoreland followed with a single to right scoring Pichardo. Michael Almanzar drove home the third run of the inning with a single to right that scored Gibson and gave the Spinners a 6-3 victory.

Aaron Dott pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1. Kevin Chavez threw 5 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits and recorded 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. James Hill was the losing pitcher, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks. Michael Bugary was the winning pitcher for Lowell.

What Went Right: Brett Nommensen; 2 for 3 with a run scored.

What Went Wrong: James Hill; 3 runs off 3 hits, 2 walks and 1 error in an inning of work.

A Look Ahead: The Renegades try to avoid the sweep against Lowell on Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium. Devin Fuller (1-1) will be on the mound for Hudson Valley versus Jose Alvarez (4-3) for Lowell.
