Charlotte Stone Crabs win game one of doubleheader against St. Lucie

Charlotte Stone CrabsThe Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs and St. Lucie Mets dueled in game one of Monday’s doubleheader at Tradition Field. Both David Newmann and Scott Shawn kept the offense off the board through most of the game.

St. Lucie broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hector Pellot singled to left to get things started for the Mets. Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed with an RBI double to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs battled back in the top of the seventh. Ryan Royster delivered a solo home run to tie the game for the Stone Crabs. Nevin Ashley and Shawn Williams then both reached on errors to put two runners on the bases. Matt Hall followed with a two run double to give the Stone Crabs the lead. Richard De Los Santos closed the door in the home half of the inning and the Stone Crabs won 3-1.

David Newmann picked up the win, going 6 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1. Richard De Los Santos recorded a save with a no hit inning and striking out 1. Scott Shaw suffered the loss for St. Lucie.

What Went Right: David Newmann; retired 10 batters in a row before the Mets got their first hit, struck out 5 enroute to his seventh win on the season.

What Went Wrong: Top of the order; Emeel Salem and Drew Anderson combined to go 0 for 8.

A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Mets play game two of the doubleheader. Austin Hinkle will be on the mound for Charlotte.
