Righthander Wade Townsend, the Tampa Bay Rays' 2005 first-round pick, has been released.
Townsend, a former Rice standout, had struggled through injuries in his minor league career, and had been coming back from a shoulder surgery last fall.
Townsend had walked seven in 2.2 innings in the Gulf Coast League.
