Hudson Valley Renegades fall to Tri-City Valley Cats

Hudson Valley RenegadesThe Game: The Hudson Valley Renegades lose to the Tri City Valley Cats on Tuesday night as Joe Bruno Stadium. The Renegades battled back to tie the game but ended up losing in the late innings. The Renegades took an early lead in the first inning, scoring two runs in the first inning. Burt Reynolds tripled to left to start the inning. Tyler Bortnick then drove home Reynolds with a single to left. Bortnick then stole second and later third base to move closer to home. Bortnick then scored on a fielding error following a ground ball by Mark Thomas to give the Renegades a 2-0 lead.

The Valley Cats answered back by scoring four runs in their half of the first inning. Jose Altuve doubled to lead off the inning then advanced to third on a fly out by Barry Butera. Russ Dixon then drew a walk and later advanced into scoring position by stealing second. JD Martinez drove home the first run of the inning with a sac fly. Erik Castro then hit an RBI single to score Dixon. Nick Stanley cleared the bases with a two run homer to give Tri-City a 4-2 lead.

Hudson Valley added another run in the top of the third with a solo home run by Burt Reynolds. But it was once again the Valley Cats topping them in the home half of the inning with three more runs of their own. Renzo Tello singled home Erik Castro for the first run. Then it was Brian Kemp’s sac fly to score Nick Stanley. Followed by a RBI single by Jose Altuve to score Tello and increase the Valley Cats lead to 7-3.

The Renegades added another run in the fourth as Bennett Davis reached first after being hit by a pitch. Davis advanced to second on a ground out by Chris Murrill. Then consecutive wild pitches moved Davis the rest of the way around the diamond to score the Renegades fourth run of the game.

Hudson Valley continued their momentum into the fifth inning. Mark Thomas and Brett Nommensen delivered back to back singled to get things started. Then Dustin Biell stepped to the plate and went yard, driving in three run with the home run to tie the game at seven.

Tri-City broke the tie in the home half of the eighth inning. Barry Butera walked to start the inning. Then Russell Dixon followed with a single. JD Martinez drove home a Butera with a double to right. Then Erik Castro followed with a two run triple to score Dixon and Martinez. Nick Stanley drove home the final run with a sac fly to score Castro and give the Valley Cats the 11-7 victory.

Kevin Chavez started the game and pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1. Aaron Dott followed by throwing 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball striking out 2 and walking 2. Jordi Amargos suffered the loss by giving up 2 runs off 1 hit 1 1/3 innings while striking out and walking 1. Jordan Chapa pitched the final 2/3 inning and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits with a strikeout. Michael Schurz got the win for Tri-City.

What Went Right: Burt Reynolds; 3 for 5 with 2 triples, a home run, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

What Went Wrong: Kevin Chavez, roughed up in his 2 1/3 innings, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits.

A Look Ahead: The Renegades and Valley Cats do it all over again on Wednesday night at Joe Bruno Stadium.
