Wednesday Moves

Alex Torres
The Durham Bulls activated LHP Alex Torres from the 7-day disabled list yesterday. He was 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 4 rehab starts for the GCL Rays. Over 11.1 innings he struck out 17 and only walked 4.

RHSP Jorge Rodriguez was assigned to the Princeton Rays from the GCL Rays yesterday. The 20 year old started the regular season finale last night for the P-Rays and allowed 2 earned runs and 6 hits over 4.1 innings. For the GCL Rays he was 2-3 with a 3.54 ERA over 11 appearances, including 8 starts.

Outfielder Willie Argo was assigned to the Bowling Green Hot Rods from the Princeton Rays to take Josh Sale's roster spot. The 22 year old was the Rays 22nd round pick in June. He hit .301/.404/.411 in 209 at-bats for Princeton with 17 stolen bases and a 31-49 BB-SO ratio.

Nick Sawyer
The Rays 40th round pick in June, RHRP Nick Sawyer, was also promoted to Bowling Green from Princeton. The 20 year old has dominated batters in the GCL and Appy with a 0.31 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 29.0 innings. With Princeton he only allowed 6 hits in 24.1 innings.

With the additions of Argo and Sawyer the Hot Rods roster stands at 26 so expect at least one more move later today.

RHSP Jeff Niemann is expected to start for the Rays on Saturday. The Rays aren't planning on using a six-man rotation, just using Niemann for spot starts as needed the rest of the season. The Rays will need to make a move to add him back onto the 40-man roster.

UPDATE:

The Bowling Green Hot Rods have placed RHSP Jake Floethe on the 7-day DL, bringing the roster down to 25.

  4. Man, tough night for the Rays minor leaguers.

Durham was shut out in both games of the doubleheader. They totaled 6 hits in the 2 games.

    Bowling Green lost 7-2.

Hudson Valley lost 7-4. The HV loss wasn't Taylor Guerrieri's fault though, 5.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 run/ER, 0 BB, 4 K. He faced 16 batters, so 1 over the minimum, and had 10 groundouts to 1 flyout. He deserved a better result, bullpen let him down.

Charlotte lost 8-0 and had a perfect game thrown against them.

My vote for team of the day: Montgomery, who had the day off.

  5. BG lost Floethe, Shull, and Machechen on disabled list, 2 others pitchers to the suspension. Floethe and Mac will be missed in the playoffs, he and Markel have pitched the best over the last Month or 2. Hope its not serious. Shull has been good also the last 4-5 starts.

    1. Fortunately for BG , and unfortunately for HV, BG was given 2 of HV's best pitchers as replacements- one of HV's main starters-Sean Bierman and one of HV's dependable relievers- Reynaldo Lopez. HV could sure use them back.

    2. You want Bierman back. He got lit up like a xmas tree tonight at Lake County. 4.1 innings pitched gave up 9 hits and 7 earned runs and is now sporting a 7.71 era.

    3. Ouch! Definitely not one of his better nights.

    4. CurmudgeonTom still it. Move to Boston you'll fit right in. Most of us know how difficult is to be good at this game every day out. The facts are Bierman and others are learning and unfortunately that means consistency /quality outings come as a result of outings just like this one. Give em a brake...
