Wednesday Moves

Alex Colome
RHSP Alex Colome has been promoted to the Durham Bulls from the Montgomery Biscuits.

LHSP C.J. Riefenhauser has been promoted to the Montgomery Biscuits from the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Here is part of the release from Montgomery:
Colome, a 40-man roster member, had been dominant for the Biscuits, with Montgomery winning 11 of his 14 starts. Over Colome's last five starts, he was 5-0 with a 1.27. It will be his triple-A debut. Riefenhauser, 22, was 7-8 with a 4.76 mainly as a starter for the Stone Crabs. After going 6-2 with a 2.98 in the first half, he was 1-6 with a 7.38 in 8 second-half appearances.
The Tampa Bay Rays optioned RHRP Josh Lueke back to the Durham Bulls.

The Bulls roster is now one over the limit at 26 (plus Longoria, who doesn't count). They also will need to add Lueke, who has three days to report from the Rays. Lueke should be cancelled out by another call-up by the Rays, probably a position player. But the Bulls will need to open one additional spot in the next couple of days.

The Biscuits roster is at a full 25. The Stone Crabs are one short at 24.

  1. I can honestly see Alex Torres getting demoted.

It's sad because I remember last year against Toronto, that dude looked MLB ready but he took about 10 steps back this year

    1. I doubt he gets demoted, but I could see a sudden 'oblique injury' that requires some rehab with the GCL Rays so the staff there could work with him.

With Archer starting tonight I have Colome on Friday followed by Torra, Pendleton and Ramos. That's just a guess, nothing official yet. That drops Paduch to the pen and has Torra replacing Torres from now on. We'll see.

Riefenhauser pitched last night so the Biscuits should be Barnese tonight, then maybe a spot starter this time to give Lobstein normal rest, then Lobstein, Thompson, Buschmann and CJRief. Stacy Long also said Thompson may miss a turn because his wife is having a baby, so there could be two spot starters next time through. I'd guess it will be Shane Dyer and Merrill Kelly unless there is another move.

For Charlotte it's Lara tonight followed by Suarez, Romero and Mateo. Then they will need someone to replace CJ, so they have some time.

    2. I would go

      Carpenter to Charlotte
      Guerreri to Bowling Green
      Kendall to Hudson Valley's rotation.

    3. If they move someone up from BG you're right, Carpenter makes the most sense. Don't know if they will since they already have a couple spots doing piggybacks. Carpenter's home/road splits are just insane, can't wait to see him in a different environment to see if those smooth out.

Also, Merrill Kelly will be the spot starter for Montgomery on Friday to give Lobstein his normal rest. I guess that means Dyer will get Thompson's spot on Sunday.

    4. I think Floethe because he is 23 and has pitched great all year. He, Carpenter or maybe Gomez! Any one of those 3 makes sense. I would slide Partridge into then rotation spot. Move Floro up and put him in the pen. Guererri needs to spend whole year in Hudson Valley!

  2. Who do you think gets moved up or activated at Charlotte?

    1. They have several days since CJ started last night. If it's a promotion I agree with the anon above, Carpenter makes sense. They could just fill it with guys already on the roster: Koronis, Jensen, Andujar, Suero, some combo of those. Not sure if Wilking Rodriguez will pitch again this year.

  3. Colome seems similar to Archer. Both have dominate stuff, and can dominate when they are throwing strikes.Command will be the key with both, on whether they can be starters,or end up in the pen as big arm relievers.

    1. Agree. Think Colome could even be nastier out of the pen, down the line of course.

  4. I don't know Ben Kline - SS from Gulf Coast League, and I don't know anything about him---except that he's a college kid who's batting .413 and seems to be stuck in a league that's way too easy for him. Can't he fit into any other TB team? This kid deserves a promotion, now.
