Montgomery Biscuits[Via email from the Montgomery Biscuits' broadcaster Jon Laaser.]

The Tampa Bay Rays have made the following moves affecting the roster of Double-A Montgomery prior to their game against Birmingham on Sunday:

INF Chris Nowak received from Durham (AAA), INF Cesar Suarez released by Tampa Bay Rays [24 + 1].

Nowak, the 2008 Biscuits Player of the Year, was batting .223 with four home runs and 23 RBIs at the time of his demotion from Durham. He had appeared in 64 games for the Bulls. In 2008, he hit .295 in 122 games for the Biscuits, hitting 15 home runs and recording 77 RBIs. Also a Biscuit in 2007, Nowak was the MVP of the 2007 Southern League Championship Series. He batted .304 during the regular season in 2007, while spending the entire season in Montgomery and appearing in 104 games. Originally a 19th round draft choice of the Rays in 2004, he is currently 26-years old.

Nowak will be issued a uniform number upon his arrival before Sunday’s game.

The corresponding moves keep the Biscuits roster at the Southern League maximum of 24 active players. One player (Jason Perry) is currently on the Disabled List.

[By Doug]: The Rays also signed Joaquin Santamaria and assigned him to the DSL Rays. Santamaria is a 19 year-old righthanded pitcher listed at 6'4", 175 pounds.
