Hudson Valley Renegades fall to Aberdeen Ironbirds 3-1

The Game: The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Aberdeen Ironbirds 3-1 on Thursday night at Ripken Stadium. Hudson Valley struck first, putting their only run on the scoreboard in the second inning. Brett Nommensen drew a walk and then later scored on an double to left by Mayobanex Acosta, giving the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

Aberdeen came back to tie the game in the fourth inning. Tom Baxter led off the inning with a double to right. Tyler Kelly grounded into a fielders choice with Baxter out at third and Kelly remaining on first. Levi Carolus followed with an RBI double to score Kelly and tie the game.

The Ironbirds took the lead in the fifth inning. Justin Dalles doubled to start the inning. Michael Gioioso followed with a single to short, advancing Dalles to third and giving the Ironbirds runners on the corners. Arthur Bonevacia drove home the go ahead run with a single to right that scored Dalles. The Ironbirds picked up an insurance run on a sac fly by Tom Baxter to score Gioioso and give Aberdeen the 3-1 margin of victory.

Jason McEachern got a no decision in the start, pitching 4 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6. Angel Chapa was charged with the loss, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 1 in an inning of service. Glenn Gibson pitched 3 shut out innings to finish the game, allowing 1 hit and walking 1. Kenny Moreland was the winner for Aberdeen.

What Went Right: Mayobanex Acosta; 2 for 4 with an RBI, only Renegade with multiple hits.

What Went Wrong: Dustin Biell; 0 for 5 with 2 K’s.

A Look Ahead: The Renegades and Ironbirds do it all over again on Friday night in game three of the series at Ripken Stadium. Kevin Chavez (0-0) with pitch against Nick Haughian (3-2).
